When Sam’s Virginia family was moving and could not take him with them, they first tried finding him a home through a posting on Craig’s List. A friend of MAESSR spotted this ad and alerted the Owner Relinquishment Team who contacted the owner. The family agreed that MAESSR would do the best job in finding their beloved Springer a new home so they relinquished him to MAESSR.
Sam is great dog! He loves all people, even young children and newborns. In his former home he patiently lived with a 3 year old child despite some occasional ear tugging from the toddler. Great with other dogs, Sam does not guard his food. He is a quiet dog and barks only if another dog starts barking. Good boy!
His repertoire of commands includes “sit,” “come,” “stay,” “roll over,” and “play dead.” This obedient boy can even hold a treat on his nose! He walks well on a leash and loves to ride in a car. He stays in an unfenced yard and comes when he is called. In the past he was the owner’s running buddy.
Sam is good at the vet and is easy to groom. He tested positive for canine Ehrilichiosis, which is a tick borne infectious disease. Once a dogs gets this, he will always test positive for it, even after treatment with antibiotics. Since Sam is a-symptomatic, he just needs to be kept on tick and flea preventative and he will be fine. His former family fed him a grain free food diet with salmon, supplemented with a fish oil pill for dry skin. They reported that this prevented hot spots from developing. Sam’s foster parents have continued feeding him this kibble and they have seen no hot spots on Sam.
Sam had fleas and a matted coat when he first arrived in foster care, but those problems have been remedied by a good grooming and monthly flea and tick preventative. He loves to be outside and to swim in the creek! Three times a day Sam is walked by his foster family and he enjoys these outings.
Housetrained but not crate trained, Sam is fine all day when his foster parents are out of the house. With great house manners, Sam does not get on the furniture or chew inappropriately. At night he sleeps on a doggie bed in the master bedroom. His only flaw is that he is a counter-surfer and so all food needs to stay out of his sight and smell.
Sam loves food and treats. He lets his people know it is dinner time and will give them a nudge if they have forgotten. Fed twice a day, Sam gobbles his food in less than a minute!
Sam is a great dog and will make any family or person a great companion.
