Sam is a gentle soul in need of a loving home in which he will most certainly thrive. His transformation in the short time he has spent in his foster home has been remarkable. He is well mannered and responsive to the direction of his foster mother. He understands basic commands, rides well in a vehicle, and enjoys a nice walk. Since he does still have a tendency to pull on the leash when walked, Sam will need continued reinforcement on walking properly. He is not a large boy, weighing in at only 40 pounds, and will happily be a lap dog if you let him. He is happiest when around people especially if he can lay next to you with his head on your feet! Sam has shown very little interest in the resident cats unless they approach him for a bit of affection at which point he is happy to oblige with sloppy kisses and licking.
The first two days at his foster home were somewhat challenging for Sam in that he clearly had little socialization with other dogs prior to his arrival. He was hesitant to play and engage the resident dogs, preferring to stand back and observe. However, he found his niche and is thriving with his new playmates. While he is improving as he continues to develop friendships with the other dogs, he is still hesitant to share toys. Typically, he grabs a ball and sticks with it. As his foster mother continues to work with and evaluate him, Sam has shown no aggression with regard to surrendering toys or food. Sam spends time crated when his foster mother is not home and willingly goes in when it’s time. He spends his nights in the bedroom next to the bed where he can easily give mom a lick in the morning when he hears the alarm clock. Sam will let you know when he wants to go out by standing at the back door although he is not very vocal about it.
Sam was initially surrendered to a Pennsylvania shelter when his owner found that he was not able to devote the time that Sam needed. Not long after his surrender, he came into MAESSR’s care. While Sam has shown no food aggression with his foster mother, the shelter reported some with the test hand. For this reason, his foster mother thinks that he would be best suited to a home with older children. He is an absolute delight and will make an amazing addition to his adoptive home.
