Update 10/15/2024: “But keep this cutie on leash as she is a flight risk due to her love of chasing those pesky squirrels.”
Sadie continues to thrive in her foster home as her foster dad reports that she “is doing great!”
Still not a fan of riding in the car, Sadie is okay with this mode of transportation but would much rather walk! She walks very well on a leash using a gentle leader. But keep this cutie on leash as she is a flight risk due to her love of chasing those pesky squirrels.
Sadie is due to have her spay surgery late October and should be ready for her forever home a few weeks after that. Are you ready to add Sadie as a member of your family? She will be a super addition!
Original: “Sadie is an amazingly loving dog, very quiet and mild-tempered.”
Sadie came to MAESSR via another rescue group that frequently takes in dogs that Amish puppy mill farmers in Pennsylvania no longer find useful for breeding. Not much is known about Sadie’s background but she is a sweet girl who is happy to begin her new life as a family pet.
Sadie is an amazingly loving dog, very quiet and mild-tempered. She is housetrained and will signal at the door when she wants to go out. She has not been in a crate while with her foster family since she is so calm and trustworthy. When her people go out, she has the run of the house along with the resident 9-year-old Golden Retriever. The two generally stay in the family room and kitchen until the family returns. At night Sadie sleeps on her bed in the master bedroom along with her canine friend.
This love generally has great house manners but has been seen eyeing the counter when food is out. She has not actually counter-surfed yet but she may be tempted. She does not bother the trash can, though. Her foster parents don’t think she has been in a home much, so living inside is all new to her and she is learning every day. She does like to climb up and sit with the humans on the couch but they are discouraging this behavior. Sadie does not seem to chew on any objects even toys.
When Sadie arrived at her foster home, she didn’t know any commands. Her foster parents have been working on recall primarily and she is beginning to understand. She gets very stimulated outside with birds and squirrels, so the first challenge during training sessions is to get her attention! She is getting better and usually comes running soon after they call for her. Sadie is food motivated so sitting for a treat is working quite well for learning the “sit” command.
She has been very good walking on a leash, but as she gets comfortable with her environment, she has started to pull more when walking. Her foster parents are trying a Gentle Leader with her and she is responding very well. Generally, she walks better toward the end of her walk when tired but gets very excited when first outside.
This little lady is very good meeting friends both human and dog when walking. She will ignore passing dogs when her people tell her to “stay with us.” When her people know the dogs they meet, Sadie is calm and does not bark. Sadie is very good with the young children she has met in the park and allows them to approach and pet her.
Because of lack of experience riding in motorized vehicles, Sadie is not completely comfortable in a car yet. She rides all right, but she is nervous. With more riding time accrued, she will get used to being a passenger.
Sadie has not taken to toys yet. The resident Golden has a toy hedgehog that he loves and always carries. Sadie knows that she is welcome to any of the toys in the toy box but is uninterested in them. She does hold a toy beer can with her paws sometimes but she would much rather have a squirrel! When her family had a dog friend visiting for a weekend, the dogs were very well behaved. Sadie was very interested in the new dog and spent a lot of time exploring her scents.
Sadie eats in the laundry room with the resident male next to her. They both have their own bowls and mind their own business when eating. Although Sadie has a great deal of energy, she also can be very calm. She loves to run and chase critters but spends a lot of time in the house napping, saving her energy for her next romp outside.
Sadie has had two visits to the vet, and while it was unfamiliar and stressful for her, she did fine. The first visits to a new place with new people are always going to be hard for a dog, but she learned that these people have treats and treat her well. She has several more visits for boosters and her spay procedure in the near future so will be more comfortable with the process. She has not been to a groomer yet but her family has taken her to several stores to introduce her to some different environments with people and she does fine.
Sadie would love to find a young family with children and potentially other dogs. She loves to be outside and ideally would like a fenced yard where she can run. She enjoys long walks in a natural environment meeting other people and dogs and sniffing all of the scents and seeing the birds and squirrels. She would enjoy being able to continue her walks in nature with her forever family.
