Sadie continues to be a happy, friendly, very well-behaved Springer/Collie mix (father a purebred Springer, mother a Collie-mix farm dog); this lineage was recently confirmed with her former owner. Her brindle markings are very distinctive!
Her foster mom recently took Sadie along to visit her daughter who has a cat, and they got along well together, respecting each other’s space. Good girl, Sadie!
Sadie usually rides well in the backseat of a car and is happy to jump in, but is given Trazodone prior to lengthy trips, in order to ease some anxiety. She walks well on a leash, and even better when harnessed. Sadie was trusted hiking off-leash and “loved, loved, loved swimming” with her former family. Currently, she enjoys long, brisk leash walks and playing “fetch” on the beach with her foster mom and loves to greet all other people and dogs that she encounters.
While living with her former family, Sadie was professionally groomed every three or four months with no problems reported. She’s fine with touching/wiping her ears, but not fond of a periodic vet-prescribed liquid cleanser/dryer treatment. Her foster mom finds that she does not enjoy being brushed (unless she’s totally relaxed,) nor is she fond of being towel dried after being out in the rain. Sadie will put up with it when it is done slowly and calmly; she doesn’t like sudden movement, or she will quickly move back and away. However, she does love to be petted all over her body when being close to her people.
While at the vet, it was noted that Sadie could lose a few pounds. When reviewing the analysis of her kibble ingredients, her foster mom discovered Sadie’s kibble was very high in calories. So, after much searching for a better replacement, Sadie is now successfully on a salmon and potato kibble which has a much better calorie count. The new diet, coupled with consistent exercise, this should bring her weight down to an optimal level.
Sadie is a real sweetheart who would love to have a new family all her own. She will make a wonderful companion to most any family providing there are no young children or in your face puppies. An older, calmer canine companion could be fun for her too. Does Sadie sound like she would make a good addition to your family?
Original: “Sadie is a happy, friendly, very well-behaved Springer/Shepherd mix.”
Sadie lived happily with her young family in Pennsylvania since she was a puppy. When a baby became part of the family, things changed. Sadie did not like the now seven-month-old baby and would grumble at this tiny, wiggly human. Although Sadie had never done more than growl at the child, her owners were concerned that once the baby started to crawl, there could be increased problems. So, they asked MAESSR to find her a new, loving home that was child/baby-free.
Sadie is a happy, friendly, very well-behaved Springer/Shepherd mix. Her father was a purebred Springer and her mother a Shepherd-mix farm dog. Her coat is a brindle-ish mix of black and tan with a white chest and paws. She sports a beautiful, full tail.
This sweetheart is completely housetrained, has no submissive urination issues, and does not counter-surf nor get into the garbage. She has full run of the house when her foster mom is away for several hours without incident. Sadie was crate trained as a puppy but no longer uses it. Sadie is walked regularly, but will stand by the door if she needs to go out at other times. She has no issues with other dogs, previously lived with a Sheltie mix, and had lived with cats in the past.
Sadie is excited and happy to meet and play with dogs on the beach…puppies not so much. Two neighbors have puppies and Sadie doesn’t much like their “in your face craziness” with their jumping, nipping, and barking. She gets nervous around them, backs off, and sometimes growls. That’s right in line with her dislike of babies who are noisy and whose movements are jerky and unpredictable, all of which led to her being relinquished.
Sadie rides well in the backseat of a car and is happy to jump in. She walks very well on a leash and she was trusted hiking off-lead in her previous home. She “loved, loved, loved swimming” with her former family. Currently, she enjoys long, brisk leash walks on the beach with her foster mom and loves to greet all other people and dogs that she encounters. However, when at home, she’s a couch potato. Sadie is not a cuddler but likes to stay close to her people. She has no interest in playing with balls or toys and does not chew inappropriate articles. Sadie sleeps on her bed, rug, floor or wherever she’s comfortable, and does not get up onto furniture or a human bed unless invited to do so. However, she does love to sleep on her foster mom’s bed at her feet when she is asked up!
With some formal training, Sadie knows “come,” “sit,” “heel,” “up,” “down,” “paw,” ”other paw,” and “shake.” She is very eager to please her people. A minimal barker, she only does so when someone’s at the door or if she hears the garbage truck. Sadie has no separation anxiety and loud noises don’t seem to bother her, but she will shake at fireworks. She doesn’t dig in the yard, wouldn’t jump a fence, doesn’t jump up on people and begs only with her eyes, even though she is VERY food motivated. Sadie enjoys her meals and veggie treats– broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, most any vegetable–and especially enjoys the homemade pumpkin, peanut butter and oat flour doggie treats that her foster mom makes for her!
While living with her former family, Sadie was professionally groomed, including nail clipping, every three or four months with no problems reported. She’s fine with having her ears touched and cleaned; however, her foster mom finds that she does not like to be brushed, nor does she like to be towel dried after being out in the rain. Then, she will softly growl to let her person know she is unhappy. She does love to be petted all over her body, although she backs away from sudden movements.
Since Sadie is allergic to chicken products, she is fed a diet of Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach (Salmon and Rice) and she loves this kibble. Her teeth seem to get dirty quickly and she recently had them scaled and polished under anesthesia and passed all lab work with flying colors. She does have a grade 3 out of 6 heart murmur which hasn’t caused any issues to date. Sadie was a perfect patient at the veterinarian! The vet says Sadie is overweight, so she’ll be given less kibble at mealtime along with fewer treats. With time, coupled with consistent exercise, this should bring her weight down to an acceptable level.
This sweet Springer-mix would make a lovely walking partner for some lucky adult family, but no children please. She would enjoy a playful adult dog to play with in her forever home and she would be good with a resident cat, too. Most of all, Sadie has lots of love to share!
