Update 06/21/11:
Sadie Mae, as her foster family affectionately calls her, is doing wonderfully. Her foster mom is just amazed at how far she has come. When Sadie first came into foster care, she needed help getting up off her bed. Now she trots (her version) happily around with a tennis ball in her mouth. Her beautiful full tail is always going. Her foster dad cut a big path around the meadow that she walks every night with her foster mom. She even manages to go in and out of the dog door and down and back up again on the big front porch steps. Sadie still prefers to wag her tail at her foster mom when she wants to go out.
Sadie has truly made herself part of her foster family. As Sadie now feels so much better, her cute personality has emerged. For someone so petite, Sadie has a mind of her own. One night her foster parents heard a big noise. Sadie had decided she no longer wanted to sleep by herself in the laundry room. Now she sleeps happily on a dog bed with the other resident dogs in her foster parents’ bedroom.
Another night Sadie’s foster mom brought her up on the couch. Sadie just sat looking adoringly at her foster mom with her tail going. She truly didn’t know what to do. She then curled up next to her mom with a big sigh. When Sadie’s foster mom brought out the big basket of stuffed toys, Sadie took them one by one to her dog bed until she had a big pile of them. Oh, my! She also loves tennis balls. Sadie must have been a big ball chaser in her youth. She will bring one to her foster mom to throw for her. Her foster mom tosses it, not too far, and Sadie trots after it. She will sometimes play with them herself, rolling them around on the floor, batting them around. Sometimes when her foster mom throws the ball, Sadie will get the ball, take it over to the mulch, dig a hole and drop it in. She will then happily play with it for a few minutes.
Sadie is quite good at amusing herself, but her favorite thing like any Springer is being with her people. She is a true Velcro girl and will plop down wherever her foster family happens to be. She is a very peaceful companion. She will just hang out watching everything going on without any demands. She loves being outside. She will go out by herself to use the bathroom but to spend any time outside she wants someone with her. She will woof at her foster mom at the door to come out with her.
Sadie’s ears and eyes are all clear. Her skin looks wonderful and her hair is soft and shiny now. She is taking twice daily arthritis medication and supplements that have greatly helped her mobility. Her blood work came back showing overall that Sadie is a healthy girl and will be able to continue on her medication. She will need continued daily medication for her arthritis and her monthly heartworm treatment in her adopting home.
Sadie is ready for a forever home of her own. She would love a home on one level with someone who is home a good bit of the time. Sadie would like a slower paced, peaceful home where she can take plenty of naps. She loves sleeping in on the weekends and hanging out on the big front porch in the evenings with her foster parents. Sadie is a petite girl with a big heart that loves everyone she meets.
Original:
Sadie is a sweet old girl from North Carolina who came into MAESSR’s care after her owner could no longer care for her. Sadie has spent the last few years living outside in a dog pen and dog house. In November Sadie lost her sister dog and was living outdoors alone. Sadie is now enjoying the indoor life of air conditioning, big comfy dog beds, and plenty of attention. And after a bath and a big haircut – except for her beautiful full tail – Sadie looks, smells, and feels so much better.
The trip to the vet for her check up was a fun experience for Sadie. She made friends with everyone at the office as they fawned over her, calling her a sweet girl. The vet discovered several health issues mostly related to her years outside. She tested positive for heartworm disease and, due to her age, she will be undergoing a slow, monthly treatment. Her heart sounds good and she shows no other symptoms. She has finished treatment for intestinal parasites and is now eating much better. Overall, she is very healthy for her age. She has minor ear, eye, and skin infections that are just about cleared up now. Sadie has been wonderful about taking all of her medications! Good girl!
Although she does hear some sounds, Sadie is mostly deaf but responds well to her foster mom. Her foster mom still talks to her and she wags her tail like she understands every word! A petite girl at 35 pounds, Sadie’s biggest issue in her day-to-day enjoyment of life is her arthritis. Daily anti-inflammatory medication and joint supplements have helped her greatly and, after two weeks, Sadie can do the 3 steps up and down to the back yard. She is taking regular walks around the 10 acre farm with her foster mom and dad, too. Sadie has a very cute version of the Springer wiggle; it is more a rocking motion while she bobs her head up and down in excitement!
This wonderful house guest is living with two resident female Springers, one another senior gal. Since she has come into foster care, Sadie is getting a refresher course in family life. At first Sadie preferred the laundry room with her bed in there. She would curl her lip or snarl at the other two Springers when she thought they wanted to take her bed. Now, she has learned there are more than enough beds all over the house and everyone co-exists happily. Due to her petite size and arthritis, she cannot maneuver the dog door so she has to let her foster parents know when she needs to go out. Thoroughly housetrained, she has not had any accidents during the day while her foster mom is away. So, she hasn’t spent any time in a dog crate due to her reliability in the house and due to her arthritis. When she first arrived in her foster home, she was gated in the laundry room during the day while her foster mom was at work. She enjoyed the peace and quiet while she was settling in and recuperating. Now, she now prefers to stay with the resident dogs on the sun porch while her foster mom is at work.
Sadie is full of life still and loves to be included in everything. She has a full tail which is a definite part of her personality. It is always going, telling everyone how happy she is!
More on Sadie to come!
