Updated 2/25/07: Rusty continues to do well since his return to foster care. As he grows more secure, he is content to lie on the floor wherever the family gathers. Rusty has also been given free run of the house without incident. He loves his squeaky toys, and he loves to play with the foster family’s 16-year-old son. When his foster mom comes home, Rusty is very happy to see her and greets her with great enthusiasm! Rusty may benefit from a training class to help him channel this energy.
Rusty does not jump on the furniture, counter surf or beg. He still pulls when walked, but his leash manners are improving. He rides in the car very well, and he listens 99% of the time. Rusty’s foster family will soon take him to the groomer, so that his outside will be every bit as beautiful as his inside. Rusty will bring a lot of love and enthusiasm to his adoptive family.
Original: Rusty came to MAESSR after being turned into a New Jersey shelter because his family could no longer care for him. He was in the shelter for a couple of weeks until a foster home opened up for him. At first, he was very frightened in the shelter, but as he settled, he became less so and did very well when the shelter staff did a thorough evaluation of him, including sensitivity testing. At 60 pounds, Rusty is a large boy and in good overall health.
As he has settled into his foster home, Rusty has done well too. He loves to play with the 5-year-old grandson who lives there. He also likes to play and wrestle with the resident springers. Rusty is crate trained, house broken, and does pull on a leash when being walked. He knows hand signals and verbal commands for “sit” and “down.” He gives paw and knows how to roll over. Though not a requirement, his foster mom would recommend a training class for Rusty to help him bond with his adopting family. With a bit of daily time committed to training, he could easily learn additional basic skills commands and perhaps a new trick or two for fun!
Like all good springers, Rusty loves to cuddle. He is very enthusiastic about everything in life. If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to share your energy and love with a new family member, Rusty is ready to help you keep that one through 2007 and for years to come.
