Original: Runaway is so named because he ran away when he was just a 9-month-old puppy. His original owner became ill and could no longer care for him so Runaway was relinquished to MAESSR. Runaway was primarily an outside dog who would be brought into the house at night. He spent his days around horses, cats, chickens and three other dogs. His favorite playmate was a little Jack Russell terrier that sometimes got the better of Runaway due to his sweet nature.
Runaway is gentle, almost to a fault, and he gets along well with the small resident terrier. He has no desire to be dominant in any way and is not aggressive at all. He loves to play with his foster dad, especially, and will “play growl” with him. His foster dad can put his hand into Runaway’s mouth in play and Runaway never bites at him. When it comes to play, Runaway has an unlimited supply of energy!
By in large, his name is a misnomer. He does not actively try to run away, but this boy will meander off if he finds a way, so his foster parents keep a good eye on him. Having been an outside dog for most of his life, Runaway does get a little “claustrophobia” at being inside at times and then he chirps and paces a little. He does not like to be left alone and will howl a bit, but he doesn’t do anything like chew or cause any trouble. He’s a little nervous about getting into the car, but he rides well once he’s inside.
When he first came into MAESSR’s care, Runaway tolerated his bath and even the blow dryer very well. He enjoyed being groomed, which included a full brushing from head to the tip of his full white tail. He didn’t even mind an ear and nail check. Runaway is still learning how to walk on a leash. There are so many distractions outside such as birds, squirrels and blowing leaves, you know. It’s easy to just get excited about being out in the fresh air and sunshine with his foster parents, but with more experience, he’ll progress.
Runaway is basically housebroken, but he has marked occasionally in the house. He is being introduced to the crate now. He knows basic commands such as “sit,” “stay,” and “come.” He waits calmly to have his leash put on for walks and waits patiently for his foster mom and dad to get ready. He has excellent kitchen manners. Runaway does not counter surf, but does stand up on his hind legs when he knows his dinner bowl is on its way. He is curious of the trash can but he hasn’t gotten into it. He does not jump on furniture, but sometimes he’ll prop his two front feet on the arm of the easy chair or the bed to see what is going on. His favorite activity is watching TV in the family room with his people. He spreads himself out on the floor on his belly with his back legs stretched out behind him. Through it all, the big, white, fluffy tail never stops wagging! His foster family finds him to be a beautiful, very sweet and friendly guy who deserves a second chance to find another loving family.
Won’t you consider opening your heart and home to this big, sweet, beautiful boy?
