Update 12/04/2024: Rudy’s foster mom works at Penn State University College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. As she discussed her new foster at work, it was suggested she ask the people who work at the animal farm for some advice on what might help Rudy feel a little better for a dog his age. In advising her, she was told to try feeding Rudy twice a day with Badland’s Ranch Super Food Complete and/or Dr. Marty’s Nature’s Blend. So, his foster mom bought both and is now feeding him one brand one week and then switching the next. It only took one week when she started to notice a difference. Now after two months on this diet, Rudy is more active and plays chase with the resident canine in the back yard. He is awake more often and he eats this food a little quicker than when he first joined his foster home. Additionally, he is a happy camper chewing constantly on his huge dog bone.
Rudy’s next big adventure is off to the vet for surgery where he’ll be altered. Look back in a month to see how our wonderful MAESSR senior is doing.
Original: “…but his special buddy was a pigeon that would hang out with him for the day and liked riding on his back!”
Rudy’s New Jersey owner asked a friend to dog sit for her until she found an apartment, and after she found a place to live, decided that she didn’t want Rudy anymore. So Rudy has lived for the past two years on an 11 acre farm and woods land area with two other house dogs. He got along with all the cats there but his special buddy was a pigeon that would hang out with him for the day and liked riding on his back! The owner’s friend has turned Rudy over to MAESSR because she thinks he deserves a better life.
Rudy is housetrained and won’t pester to go outside unless a dog or human is going outside and then he doesn’t mind tagging along to go out and do his business. He has never been crate trained and really doesn’t need to be. He likes using a couch, a wood floor or the big puppy pillow to take a nap. At night the house dog is crated when it’s bedtime and Rudy gets to sleep with his foster mom either on the floor or the bed.
Rudy only eats once a day but he eats at his own pace. As long as no other animal goes near his food everything is fine. He will growl a warning if he feels another is too close. He doesn’t bother with the trash cans or counter-surf.
He’s ok with dog toys like stuffed animals and he loves chewing on dog bones. This handsome senior doesn’t like to be in a room alone and will follow his foster mom from room to room. Since he was used to running out in the fenced in field area in his previous home, he didn’t have a collar on or hadn’t been walked with a leash. His foster mom is amazed that he is ok with wearing a collar and is now getting better walking with a leash. You go, Rudy!!!
Rudy was a good passenger in the ride to his foster home, and, while not thrilled with having a bath, did behave well in the tub and when being groomed by his foster mom.
This gentleman is a very good, loving pup who enjoys being petted and scratched all over and will return the love with a few kisses of his own. Senior Springers are the finest kind!
