Original: “Apparently Rudy’s idea of a really good time is to be loved on by his humans!”
Rudy was running as a stray in Virginia with a Beagle partner. Animal control captured Rudy and took him to a shelter, but his wily traveling companion managed to escape. Luckily for Rudy, he’s now a MAESSR boy and has settled into a caring foster home.
At his vet visit Rudy’s vaccinations were updated. The staff declared him a “sweet, kind soul.” It was determined that he was Lyme positive and has Ehrlichia; he is now receiving treatment for both. Rudy’s coat was a good indication that he was a stray. He was bathed several times and became more tolerant of a bath with each experience. He appeared to have little knowledge of the whole grooming experience, but Rudy really enjoyed his most recent bath given by his teenage friend. It takes two people to hold him still for a nail trim, but he is compliant. Rudy arrived with yeast infections in his ears, but they are feeling much better now. He allows his foster mom to keep them nice and clean without much fuss.
When he arrived at his foster home, Rudy marked in the house, but he is working hard to learn the new rules. He whines and barks at the door to go out. Rudy is crate trained and if he needs a bathroom break while in his crate, he signals by digging. Since he is still working on housetraining, Rudy sleeps in his crate for now. He should soon be fine to be left on a dog bed in a room to sleep with his people.
Rudy is a very sweet guy who wants to please his humans. He came to his foster home unfamiliar with any commands and is now working on “go potty,” “with me,” “Rudy,” and “come.” He still is very slow with the “sit” command and “down” is just not happening at this time. This good boy has not bothered with the trash or jumped on furniture. Although he has not yet counter-surfed, his foster mom suspects if given the chance he just might go for it.
There are several dogs in Rudy’s foster home; he is fine with the resident females but tends to hang out with his foster brother. While he eats in his crate, he amicably shares a water bowl with his foster brother. The old cat is mostly ignored but, if his foster brother starts to chase the cat, Rudy goes to his foster mom…no cat chasing for him!
Rudy appears to have no knowledge of toys but if his foster mom plays fetch with his foster brother he doesn’t mind watching the game. Apparently Rudy’s idea of a really good time is to be loved on by his humans! When it comes to treats, he loves hollow bones with any kind of filling, including frozen wet dog food and peanut butter.
Good on walks, Rudy is usually on a flexible leash with his foster brother. He will stop if the leash gets tight. While he easily walks a mile, this boy is low key and won’t be running any 5K races! He’s very calm and sweet when meeting people and dogs. If Rudy is petted, that person is a friend for life…and Rudy never forgets that friend when meeting for a second time!
Rudy became carsick during an initial ride. Since that time he has made three 30 minute trips with no issues. His foster mom crates him while he’s in the car.
Because Rudy truly loves people, he would do best in a home where his family enjoys hanging out with him. Since he’s very calm, younger and older people are easily added to his friends list. A canine friend could be a plus, too. No longer on the run, Rudy is enjoying the life of a house dog. Wouldn’t you like that house to be yours?
