Original: “This love is a big soccer fan; watching England win the World Cup with foster dad as they snooze on the sofa is an enjoyable Saturday afternoon for her!”
Hearts go out to this wonderful girl searching for her new family. Everyone who meets her says, “What a beautiful dog!!” Her New Jersey dad died in June, 2017, and she has been staying with relatives/neighbors since then. Unfortunately, however, they didn’t have the time to give her the attention she needs. Enter the MAESSR team to hook her up with her best forever family.
This gal has great house manners. Roxy is housetrained; she’s had no accidents and knows to signal her foster folks when she wants to go out. She had full run of the house with her former owner and does at her foster home as well. She’s in bed by 9, stretched out until breakfast. She does no counter-surfing, no begging at the table, no trash diving, no chewing stuff she shouldn’t.
A high energy Springer who loves people, Roxy would enjoy sports like Agility or Dock Diving. She loves to run and play ball so she needs a home with a fenced yard in which to run each day and give the squirrels and robins what for. Squeaky toy play is another favorite activity. She had no experience walking on leash so now she is going on many walks to learn how to walk without constant tugging. She is listening and responding with the help of treats and lots of “good girl Roxy” cheers. She goes for belly rubs with everyone she meets along the way.
Training for smart Roxy takes many forms during the day. Short sessions for the basic commands: “sit,” “down,” and “stay” are yielding promising results. Fewer barks result in treats – working on that important word, “quiet.” She spends relaxing time with her foster dad out front adjusting to all the goings-on: garbage trucks, UPS trucks, mail trucks, joggers, boats, kayaks, dogs, flags, kids on bikes, friends and neighbors. Rides in the car haven’t gone so well yet, but short rides are showing her that all that activity outside of the car isn’t terrible. Once she’s more comfortable in the car, she will need a group training class for basic training and socialization.
Good girl Rox – she’s cautiously willing; she just hasn’t had much guidance on how to participate in the world in a calm and confident way. And…a little help from an anti-anxiety med is slowly making it easier for her to focus.
Foster mom is teaching Roxy to wait for her food bowl; she lunges for her dinner, inhales her food and she needs her space when she’s eating. She’s also forgotten how to take treats gently so a “flat hand” helps Roxy avoid the fingers. She was just introduced to ice cubes so she’s learning to lick something in the hand instead of snatching at it.
This love is a big soccer fan; watching England win the World Cup with foster dad as they snooze on the sofa was an enjoyable Saturday afternoon for her! More will be coming on her progress on multiple fronts. This sweet cuddler is still learning her life skills, and a loving investment of time and attention on her forever family’s part will mean the world to this girl and to them!
