Roscoe is a handsome puppy with great ticking marks. He was relinquished by his owners Virginia owners when they found an 8 year-old child, a 5 month-old infant, a husband in the service (and subject to frequent moves) and owning 2 ESS puppies was a little overwhelming. Roscoe was the more demanding of the two “brother” pups, so his family made the heartbreaking decision to seek MAESSR’s help to find a new home for him. This active puppy has settled into his foster home very nicely. He has 2 resident ESSs to keep him company. Quickly, a lot of the anxiety he first displayed was disappearing. Roscoe has settled into the household routine and is not as hyperactive or stressed as he was upon arrival. More freedom and regular exercise seem to have helped him tremendously.
Roscoe is 100% Springer puppy. He’s full of energy, welcomes every new adventure and has no fear. He fell in love with the 3 year-old resident female. He accepts correction from the 7 year-old resident male and they have become friends. He followed a visiting 10 year-old female Springer around constantly………..”Is that you, Grandma?” He loves all his new canine friends, no matter what age they are.
This puppy does not see new people or dogs as strangers; they are all potential friends and he treats them as such. He greets everyone enthusiastically and he enjoys the attention of children. He would live best with older children as he may knock toddlers down as he hurries around at his juvenile pace. That said, he loves babies.
Roscoe has been trained well. He is trusted off-leash and, although he loves to chase seagulls, he does not venture far. As he gains confidence, he occasionally pretends not to hear commands but, after all, he is a puppy! He is crate-trained and uses one at bedtime (though he would much prefer to sleep in bed with the rest of the family) and dinnertime. The crating is more to insure that Roscoe and the resident male don’t have issues as the resident is known to resource guard. Roscoe is completely house-trained and will ring bells placed on the door handle to indicate that he wants to go out. The problem is that there is no distinction between bells for “go potty” and “let’s go play!”
He loves the freedom of having a large fenced yard to run in. He’s wearing a track in the lawn running laps and loves playing chase with the other dogs. He has not shown any interest in playing with any toys; he’d much rather use another dog’s ears as a chew toy! Roscoe LOVES to run, he very happily chases birds, squirrels, and rabbits. If there is nothing available to chase, he’ll just RUN.
This smart boy knows many commands: sit, stay, down, crate, come, no, stop, go potty and paw. Of course, as a puppy he can be easily distracted and does not always respond the first time or occasionally even the second time. With “leave it” he’s a work in progress (there are so many new things to investigate) as is walking on a leash. Roscoe does pull quite a bit and he has become a master at removing his “gentle leader” face halter!
Roscoe will make a great addition to any family. With the necessary “puppy patience” to guide him, he’ll mature into the wonderful lifetime companion he’s destined to be!
