Roscoe was surrendered to MAESSR when the combination of an active fieldie boy and a small yard proved to be too much for his Maryland owners. Roscoe waltzed into his foster home like he had always lived there, and proceeded to pull every single toy out of the toybox and strew them throughout the downstairs.
A friendly, energetic, and playful pup, Roscoe made fast friends with the resident one-year-old Springer girl. The two can often be found chasing one another through the downstairs of the house and the backyard. Typically, one of them has a toy and the other follows in hot pursuit, although every so often they both will have a toy in their mouths and still chase each other just for the fun of it. If his friend doesn’t feel like playing, Roscoe will entertain himself by chewing a Nylabone or tossing a stuffed toy and catching it while it is in the air or pouncing it with both paws once it lands. Outside, Roscoe is always up for a game of fetch and responds readily to the “drop it” command so that the toy can be thrown again and again (and again!).
For as active as Roscoe can be, he is perfectly content to relax at the end of a long day of playing, and sleeps soundly through the night. Roscoe is crated both at night and when his foster parents are away and seems quite comfortable arrangement. His manners are terrific (no inappropriate chewing, counter-surfing, or trash investigation) and he is trustworthy with his housetraining. Roscoe gets VERY excited when it is time to go anywhere, so a harness is necessary for walks and trips in the car. He knows “sit,” “down,” and “shake” and comes when he is called. Roscoe is quite friendly towards the cats in his foster home and has no idea why they don’t want to play with him. For their part, the cats give Roscoe his space but are clearly not at all threatened by his interest in them.
Roscoe came into foster care with a ringworm infection that caused some hair loss around his face, chest, back, and legs. Ringworm isn’t actually a worm at all, but a fungal infection that affects the skin. Roscoe’s owners had been giving him the medication prescribed by their vet, but ringworm infections can be difficult to treat. Since coming to foster care, Roscoe has been started on a stronger anti-fungal medication, and also gets baths with special medicated shampoo every other day. Roscoe doesn’t really enjoy the baths, but jumps into the tub as soon as when he is asked to do so. What a good boy! It seems that the treatments he’s had over the past few weeks are doing their job to get the infection under control. Roscoe is less itchy and his fur is beginning to grow back nicely.
This boy would make an excellent companion for an active owner. He is smart, athletic, and eager to please – great qualities for a running partner, agility competitor, or master “fetch-er”! He is not a big boy, but his enthusiasm for life means that he would probably do best living in a home with older kids. If there was another active and playful pup in his forever home, Roscoe would be thrilled. Roscoe has the uncanny ability to make his foster mom smile no matter what he is doing. Couldn’t you use this joy in your life?
