Poor Rocket………this poor boy’s life turned upside down when his young owner of only 38 years passed away unexpectedly. He was well cared for and obviously loved; unfortunately, remaining family couldn’t take him in. For a few weeks Rocket was blessed with kindly New Jersey neighbors who took turns caring for him while trying to find him a home. With no luck, they turned to MAESSR for help. They knew MAESSR could find Rocket a foster home and a great forever home as soon as he was ready.
Obviously stressed due to the sudden change in his circumstances, Rocket is slowly adapting and hopefully will come out of his shell with time. He is 55 pounds of pure muscle but he has not an aggressive bone in his body. He is very submissive and was surely at the bottom of the pack in his original home. He lived with two other dogs and a cat there, but he is very skittish of his foster brothers and prefers to be with humans. His favorite place to sit is under his foster mom’s legs, wherever she is sitting. He is very loving once he knows you are taking care of him.
Rocket is quiet and has wonderful house manners. He loves to play fetch in the house with a ball or any toy for as long as he can get you to throw it. However, he does not want to play when outside, preferring to run around the yard and sniff everything in sight. He has absolutely no desire to enter a crate, even to get his beloved ball, so it is great that he does not need to use one. He craves companionship with people and seems to prefer to leave his foster brothers alone. When they approach him, he immediately drops down into a submissive stance. Hopefully he will get more at ease with them as they would love to play with him. At night Rocket settles upstairs in his foster parents’ bedroom and is very happy to sleep at the side of their bed.
Once in foster care Rocket visited his family’s vet to have everything checked out. He came up positive for Lyme disease and will be treated for that. He also has a hot spot on his leg which he licks when he is stressed. Care for that is underway too. Beyond short term issues, Rocket is a healthy boy.
This beautiful, sweet Springer takes comfort in closeness to his people. He seems to prefer to be the only dog in the house; if that is his situation in an adopting home, it would help in bringing him out of his shell. Time to adjust and love is all he really needs to be happy. Such simple needs……..can you help?
