Update 09/29/08:
Parvovirus, often shortened to parvo, is a very common infectious disease that can affect dogs at any age. Adult dogs exposed to the virus may show few if any symptoms. It is puppies that are most at risk for the development of severe symptoms when exposed. Vaccination against this disease generally begins at 6-8 weeks of age with additional boosters until a puppy is 16-20 weeks old. All puppies have a window of susceptibility of several days to several weeks to parvo despite vaccination. Once symptoms do begin, the disease can progress very rapidly. Veterinary care is vital and does not always assure recovery.
Little Riley succumbed to parvo. His vaccinations were on schedule, but his protection against the disease was incomplete. His foster family put him into the hands of his vet as soon as symptoms began and he was hospitalized with care round the clock. He was even rocked by his caregivers as his foster mom had done at home. Please keep the many who miss him in your thoughts.
Original:
This adorable, bouncy English Springer Spaniel puppy is named Riley. He came into rescue through no fault of his own. He was believed to have been thrown from a moving vehicle because when he was picked up and taken to a North Carolina shelter, he had a front leg issue. That is totally fine now! Riley has suffered no ill side-effects from being deserted in this cruel way. He loves everyone and everything new that he meets.
Riley thinks that foster home life is great! He has five resident dogs to play with and show him how to behave like a good little boy. He enjoys getting praise for his good behavior too. In just the short time he has been in foster care, Riley has been crate-trained and about 98% housetrained. He has only had an accident twice in the house. Another of his playmates is the resident cat; the two play together very well!
Riley’s foster mom takes him everywhere she goes from home improvement stores to book stores, and even to pet stores! He is small enough right now to be carried around in her purse and he loves all of the attention he receives. He loves the car rides too! Riley is up-to-date on his first set of puppy shots and will need his two others sets as he grows.
Do like the smell of puppy breath and do you love to be slathered with puppy kisses? Riley would be glad to oblige you!
