Update 9/13/04:
Since being in his foster home, Riley has been neutered. His eyelid surgery is healing very well, and when his foster mom first took his e-collar off, he was a HAPPY BOY! He continues to wear it at night and when he is home alone to protect his eyelid a bit longer. He will complete his antibiotics for lyme disease on the 21st.
Much to the resident dog’s delight, Riley has begun to play with him. Riley has also found Woody’s stash of tennis balls. At first, he really liked chewing on them. Now he REALLY likes to chase them and carry one around in his mouth. Eventually, he will give a ball back to his foster mom or dad, so that the play can continue
Something else Riley likes to chase are the resident cats. He does this despite verbal admonishment not to do so. His foster family feels he would be okay with a large cat that was not easily intimidated and might swipe Riley with a paw. He should probably not be placed with timid cats as they would get a lot of exercise with Riley around!
Riley is an affectionate boy who really likes to be with his people. He follows his foster mom from room to room and likes to sit next to her on the couch for belly rubs. When she leaves him in the house to do something outside, he makes a big, barking fuss because he wants to be included in everything. The barking does eventually cease though, and, he does not destroy anything in the house. Riley has been corrected in a very stern voice by his foster dad on occasion, and though frightened at first, with praise, petting, and fussing from his dad, Riley was wagging his tail at him again. He’ll be a very loyal, playful springer for his adoptive family.
Original:
Riley II is a liver and white, field bred springer who is approximately three years old. He was found as a stray, so nothing is known of his past. Riley is UTD on all of his vaccinations and tested negative for heartworm. However, he tested positive for lyme disease and is taking antibiotics for that. On Aug 30, he is going to be neutered, have a small growth on his lower eyelid removed, and have his teeth cleaned. He was very good when he was bathed and had his nails clipped.
Riley knows sit and down, but he does not know his name yet, as he has only just gotten it! That, of course, won’t take long. He pulls on the leash and likes to move along at a fast pace when he’s out. He has marked twice in the house, but he was soundly yelled at each time and he looked quite chagrined. Riley likes to ride in the car and is quite calm until he arrives at his destination. Then, he wants to hurry up and get out!
This guy seems more people-focused than dog-focused. The resident springer would love to have Riley play with him, but so far, he has not. Riley loves having his belly rubbed and leaning in close to you to have his ears scratched. He only gets on the couch when asked and he has not been a counter surfer or trash hound. Riley is not food aggressive and has been very respectful of the young resident male springer and the two house cats. Riley has not been exposed to children while in his foster home.
Riley was crated the first night and whimpered and barked a bit before settling down. Lately, he has not been crated and is happy just sleeping on the rug next to the bed. During periods when he has been left alone with the resident springer, they were gated in the kitchen and had no problems.
He is a healthy boy with a good personality and typical springer charm. Is he the one to charm his way into your heart?
