Update 12/11/12: “Let your heart guide the decision and all else will fall into place!”
Now is your chance to bring a senior “Home for the Holidays!” MAESSR has extended its fall campaign to match our senior and special needs Springers with new, loving families. This is a wonderful opportunity to open your home and hearts to a dog that really needs you.
Adoption fees are being waived for all seniors (age 9 and older) and for special needs dogs through the end of December. Keep your eyes open for that special one who would fit perfectly into your life! It could be Remi; it may be another. Let your heart guide the decision and all else will fall into place!
Update 11/28/12: “Aside from his people, Remi LOVES his squeaky toys and food!”
This big bundle of love is a true Velcro Springer! Remi loves attention from his people. A good watch dog, Remi will bark until his foster family greets a visitor; then he begs for attention from the newcomer. No one stays a stranger for long!
Aside from his people, Remi LOVES his squeaky toys and food! He is an accomplished counter-surfer, which can be a challenge. On the other hand, he is perfectly house-trained and is trustworthy off-leash. He loves to take walks, especially the off-leash variety.
Remi’s canine foster sibling set him straight about expectations and they now get along well together. While they still compete for human attention, they enjoy playing with each other. A recent weekend was spent with relatives who have a Springer that shows little kindness to other dogs. Remi accepted her growls and snaps with no reaction. He mainly kept his distance and never engaged her. This is one very laid-back and loving boy!
Have some room in your pack for this sweetie? Remi might be a big boy, but that just means there’s so much of him to love!
Original: “Remi is used to going out in the field, flushing and retrieving game birds.”
Remi came into MAESSR’s care due to his Pennsylvania owners’ recent change of marital status and his dad’s relocation to a non-pet friendly environment. He was able to stay with his original mom, a Yorkie, and a Maine coon cat for about nine months before her living environment changed too and she was unable to keep Remi. Remi’s male owner wanted the best for his faithful companion of nine years, so he called on MAESSR to help find Remi a good home where he would continue to be treated with the love and care that he has been used to.
Remi is an Alpha dog and a BIG BOY who is just as big of a love bug. Calm and attentive, he loves to snuggle next to his people and tries to get as close to them as possible when they’re watching TV. He had slept in bed with his original owners, but since his foster parents’ bed is too high, he has settled for the floor next to his foster mom. Housetrained, Remi has remained accident-free for up to eight hours so he is given free run of the house when his foster family is out. Although he is reportedly crate trained, he does not like to be crated; considering his trustworthiness, he has not shown any reason to be crated.
This typical Velcro Springer is also protective of his people. He is a good watch dog who barks to alert his foster family when he hears someone come down the driveway. Reportedly, he grew very protective of his female owner during his nine months with her. He has transferred this possessiveness to his foster mom and will literally “push his weight around” if the resident male Springer tries to get attention from her when Remi is around. This has caused several fights between the dogs. As a result of this, it may be best if Remi’s forever home does not have a resident male dog; a submissive female may be an acceptable companion. He may be happy as an only dog too. Remi was reported to be good with cats in his original home and his current foster family has two resident cats that were raised with dogs. Remi likes the female cat and chases the male.
This big boy LOVES his food and he can be food aggressive with other dogs. A counter-surfer, Remi will check to see if there are any goodies on top of the counter, but he has not trashed picked while with his foster family. His previous owner reported that Remi is good at the groomer and doesn’t mind having his nails clipped or teeth cleaned.
Although Remi is not one to play catch or fetch, Remi enjoys rubber squeaky toys and, of course, bones and treats are also favorites. He amuses himself by trying to tear the squeaker out of his stuffed toys! Remi also loves to chase the ducks and geese in the pond and usually goes for a quick swim when he gets the chance. Good off-leash, Remi likes to roam in open ground but never goes far. He follows one word commands such as “come” and “sit.”
Actually, Remi is a trained hunting dog whose pedigree comes from a line of distinguished hunters! Remi is used to going out in the field, flushing and retrieving game birds. He is most comfortable being about 30 to 40 feet out in front, working the birds. He never runs off and always looks to see where you are. He is whistle trained, short and long blows. As a result of this specialized training, Remi is not very comfortable on a short leash. So, his “walking” manners are not typical because that is not what he is used to. Remi and his previous owner have had many good times on bird hunts!
Remi is ready to join his new family. He hopes they are outdoor people who will regularly take him out to run free in fields and woods where he can flush birds to his heart’s content.
