Original: We received a call from a volunteer with the Pike County Humane Society. They had been contacted by a gentleman looking to rehome Randy. Apparently, he was on his way home from NYC where he works. He saw this dog on the Tri-borough Bridge near Randalls Island We figure that Randy had either been thrown or pushed from a car. The gentleman picked up Randy and brought him home. He took Randy to the vet the next day who told him Randy was a purebred liver and white male springer. He really love the dog but… his wife is pregnant and they also have a one year old toddler. Randy wanted to play with the little boy but was a little rough. Randy let the little boy play with him and was very good but the wife felt he was too rambunctious for their family. Also, when left alone, Randy is a chewer.
Randy was taken into foster care yesterday. He is a very sweet boy, perhaps a little shy at first, he warms up to everyone. He is having a blast playing with Gretel, his foster mom’s dog. They wrestle and play. They hunt for bunnies together, and Randy loves the creek. He is generally an all-around nice dog.
Randy is house trained. We don’t know about crate-training yet. He pulls on a leash and will need an obedience class. He does mind well though. We will be introducing him to a cat this week to see how he does. He would be a great dog for a family with children.
Update: Just a note to let you know that Randy is doing very well. He is a very sweet guy. He has been to Rehoboth and loves swimming in the surf. He did find a bunny in our yard there to chase and knocked over our makeshift fence in pursuit. He did return right away as we called. I was glad to have him equipped with a microchip though, just in case. We now make sure when we let the dogs out at the beach that there are no bunnies around first.
We have been working with him at obedience and he is picking it up quickly. He has adjusted to the cats, although he gives them wide berth. Our other dog, Blue, wishes Randy wanted to play more, and he is getting more playful daily. Randy even goes voluntarily, for a treat, into his crate when we leave, no more stiff-legged resistance.
He is getting very comfortable here and we are happy to have him. We can heartily recommend adoption!
