Update from adoptive home 9/16/03:
I just wanted to let you know how great our little guy is doing. He is such a sweetheart. I can’t believe how good he is. I really expected some problems, but none. He listens really well for me, even comes when I call him. Now in the woods he is a little different. I know he would like nothing better than to run because of the hunter in him. When we walk the block he is very good on the leash. I took him to petsmart Wednesday to be evaluated and the trainer said he could go right to advance class. He was such a show off. Did everything I asked him to do. He goes this Wednesday for a private lesson. We will be working with him to listen off leash during with outside distractions. This may take a while but he is so smart. We took him to Erie to see my brother on Saturday, and he passed the test – he got along well with my brothers two dogs. I went from having the biggest Alpha dog to having the smallest passive dog. We all laughed about that. I also took him to the vet on Friday. I was supposed to go today but he was shaking his head a lot and I could smell a little odor in his right ear. The vet said he had the start of a yeast infection and gave me stuff for his ears. He is very good about me doing anything to him. When we go in the woods in the morning he has to get his legs hosed and brushed. No problem he just stands there for me. I have completely fallen in love with him. He loves my mom and Terry. His whole butt wiggles every time Terry comes toward him. He has adjusted very well and is really letting his true self come out. He jumps when he sees his leash, eats all his food. I do call him my velcro dog. We will call or write soon. I know you miss him but don’t worry he is really doing great. He will take his first motor home trip this weekend. We are going to the mountains three hours north of Pittsburgh. We have been taking him over to the motor home every evening to get use to the feel of it. First time in he jumped on the couch and laid down. I think he will do fine.
Update 9/7/03:
Quincy has been adopted!
Original:
This boy was brought as a stray to Frederick County Animal Control in MD on July 6. Despite a badly matted coat, he was in surprisingly good condition. Quincy was once someone’s pet. He is housetrained and does not get on furniture. Nor does he countersurf or destroy anything. This boy has been well-fed – he’s a slightly chunky 57 pounds and could stand to lose a few. The vet thought he was between 4 and 6 years old.
Quincy is a field springer with a sweet face. He’s handsome, gentle, smart and obedient. He is deferential to the two resident ESS’s (a dominant male and a spoiled princess). They all get along fine. He is also neutral with the resident cat. Quincy likes to be a watchdog (big woof) but is friendly with everyone he meets. He absolutely loves to ride in the car and go for walks. He jumps for joy when you show him the leash.
He learned the hand signal for sit immediately and also knows down (treat incentives helped his learning process). Quincy is a bit head shy. He will not come when he’s called and ducks down in a submissive flop, hides his head etc. Based on his behavior, “come” had not been a positive experience.
Quincy is an attention hound and loves to be close to his people. Belly rubs are a favorite. Quincy has not shown much interest in playing either with dogs or toys. He loves sniffing out squirrels, bunnies and wildlife however. He knows how to use a doggie door.
Quincy bonded immediately with his foster mom. He is clingy and needs reassurance. He does not like to be left alone in the yard, but he does fine in the house or on the front porch. Poor Quincy is still grieving over his dumping/abandonment/loss of prior owner. He is a very agreeable, easy-going and well mannered dog. Although he’s active and can be quite puppy-ish, his favorite spot is next to you.
Quincy needs a special home that will love and cherish him.
