Update 9/9/04:
Princess is a very petite little gal, weighing in at 37.6 pounds. She has made a lot of progress since arriving at her foster home. She will sit for her dinner and treats. She is now housebroken and will cry to go out. She is walking on a leash. Her ears have healed up very nicely, and, her fur is getting soft and starting to feel like a springer coat. The outcome of her eye surgery is incomplete at this time, but another visit to her vet is scheduled for this week.
Princess has had no idea what a toy is or how to play with one. She does play with BooBoo, one of the resident dogs, when he lets her. She is very dependent on the other dogs in the house and even lays on BooBoo. She needs company to feel safe.
Her foster parents are trying to expose her to as many different things as possible to make her less timid. Princess is very afraid around 1 – 2 yr old children. She is even unsure with somewhat older children. Her foster family feels that with more exposure she would get used to kids of all ages. Princess is a very cuddling dog who likes to lean or lay on her foster mom and dad. She will continue to make progress in their care.
Original:
A few weeks ago, MAESSR received a call from a man in MD that had 7 springers that he needed to turn over to rescue because of a local ordinance against having that many dog on his property. MAESSR has the 5 females now in our care. Princess is one of the seven. She is a 4 year old Liver and white female. Of all of the dogs we have so far from this group, Princess is the most scared little girl. The two resident dogs are sensing her uneasiness and are giving her space to settle into her foster home.
The good news is that Princess is heartworm negative!Admittedly, we were concerned about this because her ears are very fly bitten indicating that she has spent a lot of time outside. She is now UTD on her shots and is being treated for ear infections. Princess has a genetic condition referred to as Cherry eye which means that her eye lid is protruding. This is very correctable with surgery and we will have this done at the time of her spaying. She will also have her teeth cleaned while under for surgery as well.
This sweet girl is just not used to being loved. To her foster parents it seems that while she is beginning to cuddle a bit with them, she seems unsure and almost looks as if she is asking, “Are you sure this is OK?” Her foster family is working with her to build her confidence. They do feel that she will make a wonderful companion.
We will post more info on Princess as we further evaluate her.
