Preston entered MAESSR’s care when his Pennsylvania owners began working long hours and were keeping him crated while they were away. They knew that Preston needed more activity and attention than he was getting, so they made the difficult decision to re-home him and they relinquished him to MAESSR.
An adorable lug of a boy, it is clear that Preston was well-loved by his previous owners. He is extremely friendly and willing to please, if a bit goofy and sometimes unsure of exactly what that entails. Preston waltzed into his foster home and gleefully discovered that the fenced yard was occupied by two active Springers. Quite the social butterfly, Preston introduced himself to the resident girls appropriately and much running and wrestling soon followed. Inside, Preston had his first experience with meeting cats. He was understandably curious, but responded nicely to verbal directions to give them their space. As the days have gone on, Preston has continued to show interest in the cats with a sniff here or there. He also likes to follow them through the house and around the yard, but does not stalk or actively chase them. Good boy, Preston!
Preston is housetrained, and does a little dance if he needs to take a “nature break.” He does not get on furniture on his own, but clearly longs for an invitation to share the sofa or recliner with his foster mom. When she pats the seat to invite him up, he immediately obliges with a graceful leap into her lap! Preston does not trash pick, but will cruise the counters at times. At some point, Preston must have been taught that his paws do not belong up on tables or counters, because he balances on his hind legs with his front paws off the ground to see what is going on up there! He also does this in greeting, although in his excitement he will also put his paws on people. Preston used to live in an apartment, so if the normal sounds of neighborhood life catch him off guard, he will sometimes let out a few barks or a low grumble until he realizes that the trash truck or neighbors walking their dogs pose no threat.
As a model Springer, Preston loves his playtime. He is GREAT with other dogs, and loves to play tag, keep away, and chase. On trips to two different dog parks, Preston was well-behaved and demonstrated excellent canine manners. Preston is also an excellent running partner, although his foster mom doesn’t care for the fact that his long legs mean her run is his brisk walk! He also walks well on leash, with a few reminders to stay close by and not forge ahead. Overall, Preston’s energy level is moderate for a Springer. Once he has had his playtime for the day, Preston loves to snuggle. He especially enjoys sharing a seat with his foster mom and giving her a great big bear hug.
Preston is crate-trained and gets in his kennel readily for a treat at night and when his foster parents go to work. He doesn’t have any guarding or aggression issues when it comes to food or toys. In fact, Preston takes a very casual and sometimes messy approach to eating his breakfast and dinner, often wandering off mid-meal to check on the yard or where he left his favorite Nylabone. He knows the commands “sit” and “down” and comes when he is called.
This sweet and easy-going boy would make a wonderful addition to a variety of households. He is very social, so a forever home with another dog or two or where he’d take frequent trips to the dog park or doggie daycare would be ideal. If there were a cat (or cats!) as well, that would be just fine with Preston. He can jump up and has a tendency to lean into people for attention, so it would probably be best if he lived with older kids or in an adult-only home. Need a running partner, a companion for the couch, or a playful pup to wear out your other Springer? Ask about Preston!
