Update 06/07/2013: “He’ll bring instant love that will last a lifetime.”
With a month in foster care, Polka is doing great. He’s learned that life as an indoor dog is good and has acquired some basic skills that all people love. He happily gives his paw every time he’s asked and is working on the “sit” command. If his foster mom notices he’s doing something he shouldn’t, he will stop when told “no.” Good Boy!! With further training from his adopting family, Polka will shine.
Polka has all the energy of a typical youngster. He loves to run, run, run, run, run, run, and play with another dog. He loves to play fetch too. Polka will thrive with a family who spends a lot of time outdoors with him and has a fenced yard or perhaps a dog park close by for that all-important off-leash time daily.
This one is just as sweet as he is gorgeous. Polka’s ready to become part of an active and loving family…………quite possibly the first in his life. He’ll bring instant love that will last a lifetime. Ask about meeting him today!!!!!
Original: “He also loves the rain!”
Polka arrived at a North Carolina shelter with his friend, Dotz. Nothing is known about their history, as they were dropped off after hours, but it seems that living in a house was a new concept for the pair. Both needed a little time to acclimate to the unfamiliar textures of hardwood and carpet under their paws, but they are adjusting well. Despite what was likely limited exposure to indoor living, Polka is housetrained and has not had any accidents. He doesn’t signal to go out, but accompanies the other dogs outside on a regular schedule to take care of business. He sleeps in his crate at night and when his foster family is out of the house and seems content with this arrangement. He does not seem to have any bad habits like counter-surfing or getting into the trash or on furniture. Good boy, Polka!
Polka does not yet know any commands and is learning to walk nicely on leash. As a one year old, Polka is still a pup and MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs 1 year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. Polka will be the star of his class! And, he will be a pleasant companion in the car driving there since he is good rider.
Although he hasn’t yet needed a formal grooming, Polka was very well behaved for having his ears cleaned. He enjoys toys and playing with other dogs and people. He also loves the rain! Often, Dotz will pick up a toy and take off with Polka in hot pursuit. They’ll play chase and put on quite a show for anyone watching. As a young dog, Polka has a lot of energy and needs plenty of room to run and play. He is able to relax, but definitely needs the regular exercise of outdoor activities in order to do so. This guy is no couch potato!
This handsome boy is on the hunt for his forever home. He would be happiest with a human (or humans!) who do a lot of outdoor activities and have space for him to run, play, and burn off that puppy energy! Although he hasn’t been exposed to young children, his sweet and docile temperament makes his foster mom suspect that he would probably be good with kids. Everyone who meets Polka comments on his striking appearance. He is gorgeous and loving dog who will make a great companion for an active family.
