Weight: 40 lbs.
Gender: Altered Male
Location: Goochland, VA
Health: UTD, HW-, recuperating from bi-lateral TPLO surgery
Temperament: Good with people over the age of 10 (children under 10 make him nervous), good with other dogs, but resource dominant, unknown with cats
Update 05/16/2022: “This surgery requires a 10 week recovery before Pippen can resume normal activity.“
At the beginning of May, Pippen had bi-lateral TPLO surgery to repair torn ACL’s and torn meniscus in both legs. He was in severe pain. Now, he is 10 days post-surgery and is doing well. This surgery requires a 10 week recovery before Pippen can resume normal activity. He already wants to go “hunt birds.” Unfortunately, it is only short leash walks for him right now.
Original: “A trained pheasant hunter, Pippen is happiest in the field.”
Pippen was relinquished to MAESSR because he was not doing well in a West Virginia home with 2 young children. Pippen is a hunting dog who had lived his entire life primarily as an outdoor dog. He was brought indoors after the family moved to a home with limited outdoor space. Since being in the house, Pippen has acted aggressively (barked/growled/bared teeth) in 4-5 incidents toward the family’s young children as they approached him. When Pippen lived outdoors he had very limited interactions with the family other than the male owner who was his primary caregiver.
He is an overall happy, friendly dog and gets along with other dogs; however, Pippen is a dominant male who will control access to resources. He cannot be fed around other dogs.
This handsome guy is housetrained and crate trained. He does not counter-surf, or chew/dig inappropriately. Pippin is not allowed on the furniture in his home and is pretty laid back, overall. He does know basic commands, but pulls on the leash—does better with a gentle leader. Pippin rides well in the car, is a good boy at the vet and groomer, and can be touched all over
A trained pheasant hunter, Pippen is happiest in the field. He has a great nose–will find and retrieve birds. He is a beauty to see when he is hunting birds.
Unfortunately, Pippen has significant osteoarthritis in his right rear leg. The vet suspects a chronic partial cranial cruciate tear (CrCL). He will be seeing a surgeon in a few weeks to see what can be done to help his significant pain. Please think positive thoughts for one of the newest members of MAESSR’s family.
