Original: “While she loves the other dogs in the house, Piper is a true Velcro dog and will stick as closely as possible to any human who is home.”
Piper was purchased from a breeder in Maryland but her Virginia owner passed away after a rather sudden illness. Other family members could not care for this young Springer and were planning to take her to a shelter. That is when her foster mom in Virginia – a friend of the family- took her in.
This youngster is a bundle of energy and fun! Her original name was Muffin, but she did not really respond to Muffin and her foster mom thinks Piper is much more suited to her personality- sweet and spunky.
It took a week or so to settle in, but Piper has since learned to respond to her name and has assimilated into the household routine. She follows the lead of the resident dogs and plays constantly with the younger dogs in the home. She learned very quickly to respect the boundaries of the 12-year-old Springer, as well.
Both housetrained and crate trained, Piper will whimper and bark at her person when she needs to go out. She crates well when left alone and sleeps all night in her crate. Piper knows simple commands like “sit” and “stay” and gets along very well with dogs of all ages. Piper gets a little nervous on car rides and trips to the vet. She also needs some training with walking on a leash. She listens well off leash and has very good recall (better than her resident foster siblings!)
Piper’s a very typical, energetic young dog who will need regular correction on expected house manners. She does jump on the furniture but will get down when corrected. While her foster family has not seen her counter-surf or dig in the trash cans, they have noticed that she is quite a stealthy thief. She will steal socks, pens, pencils and any number of other small items and slink away to chew on them. She’s very quiet about it too! In the time she has been with her foster family, they have not witnessed any resource guarding at all or aggressive behavior of any kind.
Her current household has older children so it is unknown how she will do with small children. She is very friendly towards people and dogs she meets when out and about. While she loves the other dogs in the house, Piper is a true Velcro dog and will stick as closely as possible to any human who is home. Her foster parents think “underfoot” might be a great middle name for her!
Although overall a healthy young Springer, Piper is currently on medication for a fairly severe ear infection; however, the vet says it is clearing up nicely and will not require further treatment. She will need regular ear cleanings to help prevent further infections.
Ideally, Piper’s forever home would have plenty of room for her to run and a doggie sibling or two to keep her occupied when her humans are not available to play with her. Overall, Piper is really a great dog. Her foster family has considered “foster failing” and keeping her, but four large dogs is just too much on a permanent basis.
Piper has an exuberant yet sweet temperament and will make a wonderful addition to a family who is willing to give her the time and attention she needs. She is the perfect fit for an active family who likes to include their pet in family activities.
