Update 7/4/2013: “He wants to be involved in everything his people are doing.”
Phez was returned from his adoptive home for grumbling and snapping when family members would grab his collar in an effort to correct him and stop him from engaging in unwanted behavior. It had escalated to the point that the family was not comfortable with their children being home alone with him all summer.
Phez was moved to a foster home with multiple other dogs. His foster mom noticed quickly that Phez was very anxious. She started him on an inexpensive supplement to reduce the anxiety and it has made a big difference. His foster mom also is working with Phez to desensitize him to touch in his collar area. There has been progress with this, as well.
Counter-surfing and trash-picking are in Phez’s repertoire. His foster mom has been able to correct him without any incidents of grumbling and snapping. She believes that with practice and consistency, this issue will go away.
It is his foster mom’s opinion that Phez is just a big puppy that needs to learn a few more boundaries. MAESSR will be requiring a series of obedience classes for Phez and his new family. This is to help the bonding process and to establish who is in charge.
Phez is a very loving and fun boy. He wants to be involved in everything his people are doing. With a little work, this boy is going to be a fantastic addition to some lucky family.
Update 01/10/2013: “There is a nine year old child in this foster home and Phez just adores him.”
Friendly Phez moved to a new foster home and is winning over his new family as easily as he did the first. He continues to be a loving dog that wants to be near his people. There is a nine year old child in this foster home and Phez just adores him. Phez is a beautiful springer that loves to cuddle and be close when his family is watching TV, but he also likes to be outside and running.
Phez loves water and swimming; he even likes baths! He will come to be groomed when he sees you get the brush and comb out. He was starting on hunting by his original owner and had been out in the field several times this past fall. Phez has also been to the beach and enjoyed swimming in the ocean and making friends with larger dogs.
Phez is skilled at basic obedience and good manners. This sweet boy knows many commands, including “roll over.” He patiently waits for his food at feeding time and eats slowly. You may take a treat or toy away from Phez with no problems. There are no house training issues as Phez will go to the door to be let out. He has not shown any interest in chewing on anything other then his own toys. Being curious, he did check out the dishwasher when it was being loaded but, when told “no,” he left it alone. He has tried to counter-surf and this behavior is being worked on.
His new foster family has three resident dogs and Phez is good with all of them. He will let you know when a stranger comes to the door. Phez met a group of people that visited in his foster home and he did well; he even wanted belly rubs. An adaptable, handsome and versatile youth, Phez is ready for one more move–to his adopting home–and it surely won’t take him long to do that!!!
Original: “At night he sleeps in different areas but prefers do sleep wherever the resident dogs are including the floor, crate or with mom.”
When his New Jersey owner fell onto hard financial times and could no longer afford to keep his sixteen month old Springer, he relinquished Phez to MAESSR, knowing that a wonderful, new forever home could be found for him.
Adapting easily to life in his foster home, Phez has made friends with resident dogs and is not bothered by the outside cats. He doesn’t understand the resident dogs’ desire to tree his feline friends. While there are no children in his current home, he did have teenagers in his original home with whom he would play.
Phez is housetrained and sits at the door to let his foster mom know when he needs to go out. Although he is crate trained, he has free run of the house while his foster mom is at work since he has been such a good, responsible boy. At night he sleeps in different areas but prefers do sleep wherever the resident dogs are including the floor, crate or with mom. Phez does like to see what is on the counters, so his foster mom is continuing to work on stopping this counter-surfing. Generally, Phez has good house manners and greets everyone politely with no jumping. He knows basic commands including “sit,” “down,” “stay,” and “wait.” While walking, he is a good companion and does not pull on the leash. Also, he rides well in the car, usually sleeping away the miles.
Although his previous owner said Phez was a picky eater, this has not been the case since he’s been in foster care. His foster mom began feeding him the same venison based kibble that the resident dogs eat and he loves it. He does not guard his food or toys either.
Phez loves the daily brushing sessions that his foster mom gives him. He is good with having his ears cleaned and does not mind having his feet touched. His previous owner brushed his teeth daily, too! Phez has not been to the groomers yet nor has he had his nails trimmed while in foster care. Although he was fine with the vet exam, Phez grumbled at the vet when he was getting his last shot. Ouch! He didn’t know going to the vet was supposed to hurt.
This good little boy soon will be ready for his forever home.
