Petey had lived with his Maryland family since he was a young pup. Unfortunately, when a baby came along, he was unable to successfully adjust to the new addition and his owners made the difficult decision to relinquish him to MAESSR where he could find a more appropriate forever home.
Petey has settled into his foster home without great difficulty. It is obvious from the way he acts that he was very well-loved in his previous home. He was happy to meet the two resident female Springers as well as another male foster Springer and also wasted no time in introducing himself to the resident cats. He is friendly with the cats for the most part, but delights in giving them a good chase up the stairs or around the first floor when he’s in the mood. If one of the cats doesn’t want play, a hiss or quick paw to the nose sends Petey scurrying off. He is completely housetrained and trustworthy while inside. He is not a problem chewer and doesn’t counter-surf or investigate the trash. He does like to sit on the sofa and get into bed with his foster mom, but gets down quickly when told to do so. Because he has such great house manners, he has been allowed free run in the house at night and when his foster parents are out. He was crate-trained previously and will still kennel up if he is asked to do so, but it is clearly not his preference.
This smart and incredibly handsome boy knows a number of commands, including “sit,” “down,” “stand,” “roll over,” “shake,” and “move.” He walks nicely on leash with a Gentle Leader and can be trusted off leash. He also rides well in the car. Petey has a nice moderate energy level. He is a great walking and running partner and loves to visit the local park and swim in the river. He will also play fetch if he’s in the mood. Once he’s gotten his exercise for the day, Petey is content to rest quietly at his foster mom’s feet or in a dog bed while she watches TV.
Petey visited the groomer for a spa day and she could not stop gushing about how beautiful and sweet he was. A few days later, Petey took a trip to the vet for a check-up. The vet and her assistants were quickly won over by Petey’s good manners and thought his repertoire of tricks was very impressive. He was well-behaved overall, but was not too excited about having his ears handled. Closer investigation revealed that Petey had infections in both ears – no wonder he didn’t want them poked at! Now, Petey is getting antibiotic ear drops twice a day. His ears have already started looking and feeling better.
Because young children tend to make Petey a little anxious and excited, he will be happiest if he’s placed in a household with older kids or an adult-only home. With his good looks, intelligence, and sweet personality, he will make a great addition for an active owner looking for a loving companion.
