Original: “Pepper is very sweet and friendly when meeting others, dogs or humans, on a walk. She likes to be petted!”
Pepper’s Maryland owners were moving to Florida but were unable to take their Springer girl with them. They were anxious to find a good home for her and their groomer recommended they contact MAESSR.
Housetrained, Pepper takes care of business soon after being let out. And, as she is taken outside frequently, she has not had to signal. Although a crate is always open and available for her and the resident dog, Pepper has not used it so far. When her people are out of the house, Pepper is left in the large kitchen area with the resident dog and she has shown no signs of stress. Her former owners stated that she was left alone for up to 8 hours a day. At night she sleeps on a dog bed in the kitchen area, again with the company of the resident dog.
In Pepper’s former home, she spent most, if not all, of her time in the family room as the other rooms were off-limits. Accordingly, she has been tentative about going into bedrooms and does not get on the furniture. Yet.
This good girl does not chew things she is not supposed to chew, including the trash baskets; nor does she counter-surf. Hey, a nose in the air near the counter does not count! Food on a coffee table might be too much of a temptation.
In her repertoire of commands, Pepper knows “sit” and “down,” but she is not particularly good with “stay” because she is continually trying to get closer to her person. She has learned to “stay” while sitting before the “OK” release is given so she can dive into her food bowl.
In Pepper’s former home, she was not on the leash much at all. She spent her time in the small back yard and did not go on many leash walks. Consequently, she is not too good on the leash. She pulls and gets easily tangled on the longer leashes due in large part to her head-down zig-zag sniffing of her whole new world. With a martingale-type collar and more experience, she should become much better on the leash.
Pepper is very sweet and friendly when meeting others, dogs or humans, on a walk. She likes to be petted! She is very good with neighborhood children, ages 5 and 9. She has not seen any cats in her new digs, so the verdict’s not in on how she is with kitties. Pepper has not been on many car rides but seemed fine when driven to her new foster home and on short trips to the store.
When it comes to toys, Pepper plays with a couple with squeakers and has gotten more playful the longer she has been at her foster home since she likes interacting with her people. She does not resource guard her toys or food, though at mealtime she may prefer to be fed first (the resident dog will usually defer to his elder sister). She does not growl if food, water, or toys are taken from her. Good girl!
Pepper is always eager to go outside whether just for a walk or to hang out with her people. She has a nice energy level, not too high or low.
A spa day is coming soon for Pepper as she is due for a grooming. Her coat is thick, soft, and fluffy and she tends to shed a bit. With the warmer weather, it is especially time for a haircut. She is good about being toweled off when wet or if she if being brushed.
A variety of forever homes could be a good fit for Pepper as long as she gets lots of TLC. She is good with children but would also be a great companion in homes without children, as long as she’s not being left alone all day. She also seems to like having another dog around but she could do without it if she’s getting the attention she needs from the masters of the house.
Put some spice into your life by adopting Pepper!
