When Penny’s Pennsylvania owner died, his wife was unable to continue providing for Penny’s needs and made the difficult decision to relinquish her to MAESSR. Penny was a little nervous with all the change when she came to her foster home, but her sweet personality shone through despite the nerves. With the help of an inexpensive anti-anxiety medication, some positive attention, and a consistent routine, Penny is adjusting quite well.
At 25 pounds, Penny is just the right size for cuddling, and her foster mom even confesses to occasionally picking her up and carrying her like a baby. She will jump onto the sofa and roll over to ask for a belly rub, or if a lap is available, she is happy to warm it up! Penny will sometimes jump up for attention if she feels that she is being ignored. This is bad manners, regardless of one’s diminutive size, so her foster parents are working to curb this behavior by only giving her attention when she is sitting or standing nicely. Other than hopping onto furniture, Penny has excellent house manners. She is too small to counter-surf effectively, and has made no attempts to get in the trash.
Penny doesn’t seem to know many commands. She does sit nicely for a treat and to go in and out of doors, and will come when she is called. She was not used to being crated before coming to her foster home and was a little distressed at this the first night. She quickly figured it out and is now crated without issue at night and when her foster parents are at work. Because she is completely trustworthy in the house, Penny does not need to be crated and has been fine when given free run while her foster mom runs errands.
Even with her small stature, Penny can be quite the little steam engine on leash. When she is wearing a harness, walks are a much more enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Penny rides nicely in the car, whether she is tethered, crated, or allowed to ride “shotgun” (her favorite!). She has a moderate energy level and so far hasn’t shown much interest in playing with toys. She is friendly with the other dogs and cats in her foster home, but hasn’t engaged in any play behaviors yet.
