At 35 pounds Penny is very slim, petite and at a good weight. Tan markings on her eyebrows, cheeks, and under her tail that make her a tri-color are subtle but quite defining. She’s a cutie!
When she went for her vet check, her looks and gentle nature caught the eyes of everyone in the waiting room. She was patient and accepted the hands-on of a thorough exam. She is being treated with drops for mild infections in both ears and will have her teeth cleaned. They are very stinky and may be contributing to her lack of enthusiasm at meal time. She does manage every treat she is offered, though, and shows a lot of interest in what the people in her home are eating, so careful observation will continue.
Penny must have been someone’s pet. She is completely comfortable with all that goes on in a home. She is housebroken, crate-trained, and sleeps on a doggie bed in the bedroom with her family through 8 hour nights. She doesn’t seem to know commands or to have much experience on a leash but is willing to learn the basics. The trip to her foster home was about an hour and she traveled well in a crate without a peep.
While in a shelter Penny readily shared a run with another dog. Three springers met her with great excitement when she arrived at her foster home. One recently neutered male immediately fell in love. She diplomatically let him know she wouldn’t return his interest. She politely declines the play bows of the playful ESS and gives the grumpy senior her space. While at the vet’s office, she was friendly toward a small dog and ignored a disabled senior. All in all, she’s just good with other dogs. She hasn’t met cats since her arrival.
So far, Penny hasn’t shown interest in toys or a ball. What lights her up are people. While at a shelter, Penny met elementary-age children well. She seduced a spaniel-loving man with a hat whom she sat next to while waiting for the vet. She literally groaned as he petted and rubbed her, finally going belly up to everyone’s delight. All hated to see her head for the exam room that evening!! She also gives the biggest and quickest kisses to any face within a yard of hers.
Penny came into MAESSR’s care from a shelter in central West Virginia. She arrived as a stray and the staff could hardly believe no one was reclaiming such a nice dog. She’ll have her chance to love a new family soon. Updates on Penny as she settles a bit more…
