Original: It was the luck of the Irish that brought took Patt from life as a stray in Pennsylvania to a shelter and then to MAESSR’s care and a new life!
Patt must have been an inside dog at one time since he is housebroken, and he barks to let his foster parents know when needs to go outside. He definitely needs a refresher course in house manners, though. When given a chance, he will counter-surf and get into the trash. His foster family is working to alter these behaviors and establish some in-house rules for this high energy Springer boy! Another needed behavioral change for Patt is chewing. He loves to chew on shoes and blankets! It won’t take him long to figure out what appropriate chew toys are with the guidance of his foster family.
Right now, the only command that Patt knows is sit, but his repertoire will increase quickly. He already knows how to walk well on a leash. A basic obedience course will be a positive thing for his future forever family and him. Patt is not crate trained and he hates to be crated! Since he is housetrained, he has not had to be in the crate. When there is no one home, he is gated into two rooms of the house and has been fine with that. If a car ride is offered, Patt is the first one ready to go. He loves to go for car rides, and he is a good passenger.
Patt loves to be around people and is not afraid to walk up to them with his tail wagging. He does cower when one goes to pet his head, though. He must have met with some unfortunate human experiences in the past but he still loves people. Great with the resident dogs, Patt joins in the play and enjoys going on walks with his foster mom and his four-legged, canine friends. If a cat crosses his path, Patt will chase it, so there should be no kitties in his forever home.
This sweet, active Springer boy would like a forever home that has a lot of time for him. He has a lot of love to give in return.
Update 06/23/09: News need not be lengthy to share that Patt is shaping up into one fine boy. He is doing great with his training to be a well-behaved dog. He is learning not to counter surf. In his excitement to greet people, he does still jump, so his foster parents feel he will be the most successful in a home where family members and frequent visitors are 13 years old and above. His family is working to correct this behavior and his next family will need to continue what has been started.
Patt will pick up on hand signals and knows when you point at him that it means he is to stay out of a room. He still chews on things, but his favorite toy is a stuffed animal now. He still shrinks a bit when you pet his head, but he is an overall happy dog around humans and dogs as well. With a little more love and loving guidance, this lucky fellow will make one wonderful pet!
