Patrick came from a Pennsylvania breeder who hadn’t been able to sell him and his brother, Rudy 8. The owner contacted MAESSR to place these two puppies.
A sweet, goofy puppy at 8 months old, Patrick is bigger than his two foster Springer siblings but is a super calm pup. He loves to run around the yard chasing sticks and his doggie friends but is just as content to curl up for an afternoon nap or play with one of the children in his foster home. He currently lives with a 6-year-old and an 11-year-old and has been exposed to a 1-year-old almost daily. As he is still learning how to live in a house, he needs reminders about what are the correct toys to play with and that new sounds are all right. It takes him a minute to realize what’s what, but he adapts quickly and responds to gentle correction easily.
Never having lived without another dog, Patrick would love a canine friend of this own to play with and learn from in his forever home. In his foster home he lives with an 8-year-old female Springer and a 2 1/2-year-old male Springer. He gets along with both great and defers to them. He hasn’t yet to meet a cat.
A little timid when first meeting someone new, Patrick is a pretty typical Springer craving attention and having no concept of personal space once he finds a human that shows him affection.
Patrick is thoroughly enjoying being a house dog. Stairs were a little scary at first and that doggie door was tricky, but he is loving soft beds, meal time, and play time. Housetraining is a work in progress and he has quickly figured out that a “sit” will get him a treat when he potties outside. Crate training is super scary for Patrick so he is getting slow exposure with favorite toys and meals placed inside to show him being in a crate is not so scary. He is great left loose in the house and will sleep on a dog bed on the floor at night. He is also quite happy to do some snuggling on the human bed or couch if his people give him permission.
Patrick had only been on a leash and in the car to leave his first home, then to leave his brother, and go to the vets so it’s not his favorite thing, but he is learning. He doesn’t pull on the lead and is happy to trot alongside a favorite person. He will drool like crazy out of fear in the car but does well either crated or tethered. He doesn’t jump around or bark. Long rides do make him anxious so food is best to wait until after the trip. He is learning the car isn’t so scary with short trips to take his human foster siblings to school and visit fun places like the beach.
Receiving some obedience training from his foster family, Patrick has learned “sit” and “drop it.” “Off” and “down” are works in progress. Note that MAESSR will require Patrick’s adoptive family to take their new family member through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with their pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. Patrick will be a star pupil!
Even when scared, Patrick has great manners. He will let his foster mom give him medicine, clean his ears and do an exam easily. Drool is the only thing one has to look out for!
Patrick would love a forever home where he could be included in all of its activities! He would LOVE having a playful canine companion as well as kids in the family who would play with him. Patrick is going to make some lucky family a wonderful new friend!
