Patches was found as a stray in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania and was turned into the humane society there. Upon entering the shelter, he was very shy and scared. The shelter staff allowed him to approach them and soon was able to win his confidence. Patches soon won over the staff and was given privileges to the office for play and socialization. Patches still is very shy and will back away from strangers; he is not aggressive, but just fearful until he gets to know someone.
He is assimilating nicely into his life with his foster family which includes three human brothers from nine to fourteen, foster parents, and two resident ESS. The eldest resident Springer is a female who makes sure this pup knows his boundaries! While big sis doesn’t stand for any nonsense, big brother Springer tolerates gentle nudges for play and grumbles only slightly to tell Patches that he’s had enough. In the back yard, Patches runs circles around them both! Oh, and how he looooooves to run! He would make a great agility dog. He also loves to play fetch and will carry a squeaky dumbbell outdoors in the backyard.
In his foster home, Patches is confined to a large kitchen/dining area where he plays and sleeps. On occasion, he has been caught jumping the baby gate into the hallway and then waiting on the other side to be let back into the kitchen! During the day, he’s either sleeping next to the resident male Springer or at foster mom’s feet or lying by one of his foster brother’s feet while he home-schools. Overnight and while family is out, Patches is crated. He eats his dinner inside the crate and goes in for treats at bedtime and naptime. He would much prefer to be with his humans than the crate, but for now, the crate is a must to keep this adventurous pup away from mischief. Although Patches is housebroken, his foster family is careful to give him sufficient time outdoors to run and play and take care of eliminating especially after he has had a long sleep. They want to encourage good habits in this sweet Springer boy!
Patches will need work on basic commands since he knows so few now. Obedience training is a must for this pooch! He is currently learning sit/stay. He likes recess better than school now since he loves to play and is still very much in the puppy stages of mouthing. Patches is alert to new sounds both inside and out and he will let his foster family know when someone is approaching the house.
Patches will make an excellent companion. Is your family ready for this love-bug?
