Sometimes people are hard to understand. Take Patches’ original owners for instance. They split up and neither of them wanted their Springer pup of 18 months. So, rather than taking him to the shelter or contacting rescue, they dumped him off in a Pennsylvania state park and sped off with Patches running to catch them. Luckily, a park ranger witnessed this, stopped the truck, and spoke with the owners. The ranger then took Patches to the shelter where workers were able to get his old vet records. Then, MAESSR was contacted for assistance. Now, this deserving young Springer will get a responsible, loving new family!
Housetrained and crate-trained, Patches has been a responsible boy in his foster home. He sleeps in a crated at night and when his foster dad is not at home. Soon, Patches will be given more freedom in the house since crating him does not seem necessary. If he cannot see his people or the resident dogs when he is crated, Patches will bark to express his unhappiness at being apart from the pack. Patches likes to jump on the bed and would probably want to sleep there, but for now it’s the crate at night. His Springer savvy foster dad keeps the counters free of food and the trash inaccessible to the dogs, so counter-surfing and trash can inspection have not been issues.
His foster home has multiple resident dogs, so, Patches did some grumbling with the resident Springers for pack position initially. Now that things are squared away, he only wishes that the older residents would play with him more! Patches is food protective with the resident dogs and gets very excited when waiting to be fed. Because of this, he is fed separately from the rest of the pack. He is not possessive of his toys, though, and shares with the resident Springers. There are no resident cats in his foster home, but when he was at the shelter, he passed their cat testing with no problems. A shy kitty would not do for Patches; instead, having a gutsy, dog savvy cat would be best if felines were in his forever home.
Patches entertains himself by chewing on deer antlers and bones and by carrying around tennis balls. A smart boy, he loves playing in the water during the summer’s heat. With satisfactory leash manners, Patches is fun to take for a walk. He knows his name and responds to “come” and “sit.” He loves running around inside his fenced yard. Inside, Patches is a regular love sponge wanting to be near his foster dad; he slowly eases his way onto his lap and when his foster dad is at the computer, Patches puts his nose under his mouse hand which slows down his computer use! If a hand appears to be free, why not have your human pet you? Right? Patches likes to ride in the car and sleeps a good part of the ride. Grooming is another way to get more attention, so Patches likes grooming. He’s always ready for ear and tummy scratches, too.
A real sweetheart, Patches will be a wonderful addition to an active family who would be committed to helping him burn off some energy on a daily basis and who would continue his obedience training. His forever home could have older children to play with him who could not be knocked down accidentally. Also, a playful canine companion would be nice. Does this sound like your home? If so, inquire about making Patches your Springer!
