Update 10/29/04:
Ms. Patches is back in rescue and looking for a new forever home. In her recent adoptive home, Patches showed some jealous tendencies between the mother and the young children. She was returned to her original foster home. With that in mind, Patches should only be placed in a home with children over 12 years old. She also suffers from separation anxiety and needs to be in an x-pen or crate when left alone. She has no issues when her people are home with her.
Patches has lived in her foster home for two months. She has lots of energy and will play with the three resident golden retrievers for hours at a time. Even though they are twice her size, she keeps up well, accepting the “give and take” of dog play. She takes direction from the goldens, so having another dog in her adoptive home would be a tremendous help for her. She is not a barker by nature but will bark if others start. She eats beside the goldens and waits her turn for food. When her foster dad heads to the cookie jar, Patches heads right into her x-pen and waits for her treat. She is currently being left alone for 4 to 5 hours at a time. She would do well in a home where someone was available midday to offer her a walk or exercise in the yard. This would help her burn off energy too.
This gal loves to snuggle and be close to her people. At night she gently snores and must be dreaming of another day of play and excitement. Patches can keep the people and dogs in her life active and busy. For a family with the time and energy to share with her, she could be just the girl!.
Original:
Patches is a pretty black and white 9 month old female. She weighs 39 pounds and has just been spayed. Her owner surrendered her because of a move. She is an extremely friendly girl that loves to smack you with her nose to get your attention. She gets along great with the resident goldens, 2 females and one male, and has settled into the pack quickly. She tries to entice them to chase her and has learned that, if she grabs their tennis balls, she can get them running. She loves to jump up and off the deck and seems to pose in mid-air.
Patches is still learning the ropes when it comes to house manners In the house, her name is ” Down Patches”. She loves to scope out all the counters, but is gentle getting up and down. She likes to chew on bones and has been very willing to let her foster dad take any toy away from her. She shows no signs of being food aggressive in her foster home. However, she is not fed around the resident dogs.
She is making good progress on housebreaking. Her foster family expects her to be completely trained in a few more days. When her people aren’t home, Patches is crated/x-penned and, after some initial complaining, settles down quickly. She has slept through the night. She will follow from room to room and goes running around the house when she loses sight of her foster dad.
Patches came from a home with a 4 year old child. The surrendering owner reported she had no problem interacting with children. While in the shelter she met cats. She was a little rambunctious with a large Persian who promptly swatted her nose. Patches backed down quickly and lost interest in the cat. She hasn’t showed much interest in other cats she has met. Patches learned “come” and “sit” in her previous home, but has had no formal obedience training.
On her ride from the shelter Patches wanted to be the co-pilot, but settled on the backseat, either laying down or gazing out the window quietly. Her foster dad thinks she would do well in a family with children and/or another dog to keep her company.
