Original: “Paige is the sweetest older girl and she has found her way into her new family’s hearts and home.“
Paige came into MAESSR’s care because her Delaware owner was hospitalized and could no longer care for her. A neighbor came to the house to take care of Paige three to four times a day until she was transferred to a MAESSR foster home.
This sweet, easy-going girl is housetrained and because of her medical condition, she is taken outside frequently. Luckily for Paige, her foster mom works from home and she has someone home most of the time. Her sense of smell and hearing are her most powerful forces in learning about her new surroundings. She has adapted very easily to her foster home and the outdoors while on a leash. Her owners had not crated Paige, so her foster family is working on this since the other dogs in the house are crate trained. When her foster mom goes out, Paige usually is confined to the kitchen with her bed. With her blindness, it is easier for her to be in a more confined area.
Paige stays in her foster mom’s workshop with her every day and rests on her bed with her canine foster brother and sisters. And they love being outside when the weather is nice! At night Paige sleeps in her bed. She is still trying to navigate being up on the human’s bed and couch. Her house manners are impeccable for her age and disabilities.
When walked outside, Paige stays on her leash and she and her human are just beginning to take longer walks. It is apparent that she was leashed in the past and she seems more comfortable with a harness than a collar.
Paige was a great patient at her well-check visit and the vet techs had no trouble trimming her nails. She has not been to the professional groomers but at-home brushing and using the clippers to trim her feet and fur do not bother her. She has been to see a veterinary ophthalmologist for redness and dryness in her eyes. She was diagnosed with dry eye and will be on daily drops forever. At the visit she was told she was an excellent candidate for cataract removal. This procedure would help her regain her sight. At some point, Paige’s mammary mass will also be removed.
Because of her diabetes, Paige is now on a prescription diet of both dry and canned foods. She is a little underweight, so she is fed three times a day. With this new feeding regime, she has put on one pound in four weeks! She is fed by herself in the kitchen away from the resident dogs since it takes her longer to finish her meals.
Her foster mom is also working with Paige’s movement around the house. The resident dogs wear bells on their collars to help Paige hear where they are. This simple addition prevents Paige from running into them as much.
Her foster family are hopeful to get her diabetes under control and then her incontinence issues hopefully will get better as well. Paige lives up to the Velcro Springer name. She never leaves her foster mother’s side and shows some anxiety if she is briefly separated from her. After having cataract surgery, Paige may regain her sight and then her mammary mass can eventually be removed.
Paige is the sweetest older girl and she has found her way into her new family’s hearts and home. She becomes MAESSR’s most recent permanent foster and will live with her foster family for the rest of her life, getting the loving care she deserves.
