Oscar was relinquished to MAESSR due to his allergies. His Virginia family had three children under the age of seven and Oscar would steal their food. This aggravated his allergies. It was a tough decision, but his family felt that he would do better in a home with no small children who would be easy marks for this food-savvy pup.
When Oscar was eight to nine months old, he began having allergies. His skin was itchy, and the resulting scabs got infected. His previous family spent about six months getting this under control. He never had allergy testing, but he does okay when consistently fed Kirkland Salmon and Potato kibble and given NO treats. With small children in the house Oscar found he could regularly steal food from them, which aggravated his allergies. Currently he is taking one half tablet of Apoquel twice daily and has been on this for six months.
This boy is great with people of all ages but would obviously be best in a home without young children. He loves people and thrives on their attention and might jump up on them in his joyful enthusiasm. He is good with other dogs but has no experience with cats.
Housetrained and crate trained, Oscar sleeps in the crate at night and for a few hours during the day. He crates with the command “kennel.” He has had training as a pup and again when he was around one year old. This smart boy heels well and has good recall. His previous family often hiked with him off leash. Additional commands that Oscar knows are “sit,” “stay,” “down,” “leave it,” “come,” and “heel.”
Oscar has been known to try to raid the trash on occasion and he might try to counter-surf. This sweet boy has no submissive urination and, outside, does not dig or jump a fence. His favorite pastimes, aside from getting attention from his people, include running, swimming, playing, and chasing bubbles.
At the vet and groomer, Oscar is a good boy, although he does enter reluctantly. He pulls on his leash toward the door, hoping he can avoid those experiences. Thunderstorms make him a little nervous and he’s very afraid of fireworks.
Oscar is one extremely sweet boy. He loves attention and wants to be with his family. His ideal home would be one with people who would shower him with love and help him adhere to his diet. Are you ready for this love bug?
