Oscar is a very sweet boy whose energy and enthusiasm belie his age, which is reported to be 10 years old. He appears to be a Springer mix, but as we know, “Springer is a state of mind,” and clearly this applies to Oscar! When adopted as a 3 year old, Oscar lived in Louisiana with another dog and a cat in a house with free access to a fenced yard. Last year his people’s work situation changed and Oscar moved to an apartment in Maryland where he lived without his four-legged companions. His new situation found him spending long periods of time by himself. It was recognized that Oscar was not thriving in his changed environment. MAESSR was contacted to find him a new home where his people are around a little more often and can provide Oscar with some more outside time.
Oscar’s foster mom reports that he is “the sweetest dog” she’s ever fostered. He immediately fit right into the home, making friends with the resident Springer as well as the humans in the house. He loves to be petted, resting his head on any available lap for an ear rubbing and general cuddling. Oscar doesn’t mind a good belly rub, either!
This sweet senior came to MAESSR with bladder stones and he tested heartworm positive. The bladder stones have been taken care of with surgery, from which Oscar is recovering with flying colors. MAESSR’s vet determined through x-rays that Oscar’s heart and lungs are in great shape, showing no damage from the parasite infection, and has recommended that Oscar’s heartworm treatment consist of twice monthly doses of Heartgard tabs over the course of a year. At the end of the year, retesting will occur. MAESSR will supply the medication to Oscar’s adoptive family and will pay for the follow-up vet visit and heartworm test. Although most dogs are heartworm-free after one year, MAESSR will pay for another year of treatment if a test is still heartworm positive.
Other than these two medical conditions, this guy is in great shape…no one who sees him can believe he’s 10 years old. Oscar was completely relaxed during the vet’s exams, and didn’t mind having his ears and paws handled.
Oscar knows a few basic commands like “sit” and “come,” and will go to his bed when directed. He won’t get on furniture unless invited, and he sleeps in his own bed at night. He is crate trained and will sometimes retreat to it during the day. This well-behaved boy doesn’t counter-surf, beg for food, or make a nuisance of himself in the kitchen during meal prep time. There’s no resource guarding of food or treats, and he doesn’t seem that interested in playing or toys. All in all, Oscar’s house manners really are quite pleasant…such a gentleman! Additionally, he loves walks and does well on the leash.
Oscar thinks his perfect home will be one where he doesn’t have to be alone for long periods of time. Older children would be fine, but he’s not sure he can accommodate the rambunctiousness of younger kids anymore. Other four-legged companions would be just fine with him, too.
