Original: Oreo is a very handsome youngster, with a mighty tail which he carries high over his back and wags all the time. He came to his foster home after having been picked up by animal control officers in a central West Virginia County. He appears to be in very good health and has just a bit of basic vetting to complete in the coming week.
Oreo’s foster dad suspects that Oreo was an outdoor dog in his previous life. He loves to spend time patrolling the back yard and sleeping on the deck. He loves to run and jump, yet he hasn’t tried going over the 4′ fence on his boundaries. Oreo plays like a puppy, and although he gets along with the 3 resident dogs, he can’t get them to share in his games. One of his antics is to hoard the dog bones in his crate. At times he is so pesky as to remove a bone from another dog’s mouth to add to his collection, and the others simply let him get away with it. What a nuisance they must think he is! There are cats in Oreo’s home also. He will go up to them and get into his play stance, hoping they will play, but they are reluctant, much like the dogs.
Crate training is complete for Oreo and his house training is coming along. He has had occasional accidents, so his parents are working on this with him. Each time he exits his crate, he is taken to the back door for an opportunity to go out and be successful in the right place. He needs just a little more practice.
Oreo hasn’t spent time with children since in his foster home, but he is very sweet and loving with adults. He allows them to remove his food mid-meal if they want. His foster dad guesses that with children he would assume the “play with me” position and lick faces. Oreo loves to be brushed and petted. He very rarely barks. He’s always willing to join in on a car ride but must start out on an empty tummy if the trip is to be uneventful. Hopefully with a little more experience and stability in his life, Oreo will outgrow this little need.
“Puppy school 101” with his adopting family will be perfect for Oreo. He is good natured, bright and should learn his basic commands and what is expected of him from those who will love him forever. He would enjoy having an active family, perhaps one who already has a dog that would share bones and play with him. By the time Oreo is a 2-year-old, his puppy antics may be gone, but his sweet, playful nature will only be better!!
