Update 2/5/04:
Oreo’s foster family took her to a local veterinarian who examined Oreo and looked at her x-rays. His opinion is that Oreo definitely has hip dysplasia, but it may not be as bad as we previously thought. At this point Oreo will be taking Cosequin DS, a Glucasomine Chondroitin supplement, and her exercise will be limited. MAESSR is going to keep her in foster care for a few months and see how her hips are progressing. If she is doing well, then we will start looking for the “right” home for her that will allow her to continue to take it easy for a while.
Oreo appears to be in good health otherwise. This little sweety is a very tiny girl weighing only 27.8 pounds. Oreo’s weight is actually a plus as far as her hips are concerned. Oreo’s foster family will be making an appointment to have her spayed next month.
Oreo is adjusting well with her foster family. She loves the snow and being outside. Oreo’s previous owners taught her to ring a bell to go outside and that bell is always ringing! Another cute things about this little ‘Oreo Cookie’ is that she loves water. She has been reported to jump into the shower and bath tub with her foster families! Oreo is definitely a wonderful little puppy and a joy to be around.
Original:
Oreo is a really sweet 6 month old ESS who was given to MAESSR because she is going to need some major surgery on her hips. She has severe hip-dysplasia. Oreo’s owners had taken her to a specialist who explained to them that her left hip is very bad- has 20-30% coverage- the right side is in and is taking the brunt of the body weight. The surgeon talked about cutting the>femur out and putting in plastic plating and also total hip replacement. They estimated a cost of $5000.
Oreo’s family was afraid that she would not fit in with their active lifestyle because of her hip problem. Oreo’s veterinarian told them not to be ashamed to put her down. The veterinarian also suggested they contact a rescue group to see if they could place her with a less active family. Lucky for Oreo and MAESSR they did just that!
A MAESSR volunteer went to evaluate Oreo’s personality. She reports that Oreo is a very sweet girl. She is ALL puppy but has learned some basic obedience. Oreo will sit on command and typically comes when called. She LOVES to play ball and is very active despite the condition of her hips. She was excellent with the two small children (both under the age of 6). Although Oreo was all over the volunteer (jumping, mouthing her hands, etc.), she never saw this behavior with the children.
Oreo allowed her to check her ears, teeth and feet (nails) and would often simply roll over on her back. She did not have any problem with anyone taking toys from her mouth and she has no food possessiveness or aggression. She is house broken and crate trained.
MAESSR has taken Oreo into foster care. Her foster family reports that she is getting along wonderfully with her new foster brothers. Oreo is a very vocal little girl and is not afraid to voice her opinion. She played very hard today, despite her hip problem, and then laid at her foster mom’s feet and was snoring within 2 minutes.
Oreo will be visiting a local veterinarian to determine the treatment that she needs. Can you help give this little lady the chance that she deserves to dance her way through life?
