Original: “Oreo has done extremely well with the other dogs and actually seems to enjoy having a ‘friend’ around.”
Oreo had lived with his family in Virginia since he was a puppy. He was a great dog most of the time…except when he stole his favorite food – CHOCOLATE! Of course, with a name like Oreo, perhaps he was destined to love chocolate but, given that dogs and chocolate don’t mix, this became quite a problem. Oreo has an amazing talent for smelling out that wonderful confection and, with young children in the house, Oreo orchestrated excellent stealth operations. The family could not get it away from him once he claimed it as his own and they tried several ways to correct his behavior. Nothing seemed to work. The extremely painful decision was made to let MAESSR find Oreo an adult only home so no one would get hurt.
In his foster home, Oreo has been wonderful. He is both housetrained and crate trained and had obedience training as a pup. His command repertoire includes “sit,” “shake,” “stand,” “roll over,” and “spin in a circle.” Oreo’s not really interested in toys and does not chew on inappropriate objects. Of course he’s a known counter-surfer and trash picker and has “stolen” a couple of minor items; however, his foster mom was able to trade him for a piece of hot dog…he has not been able to get any chocolate!
Oreo has done extremely well with the other dogs and actually seems to enjoy having a “friend” around. Reportedly he’s good with cats, too. This friendly boy loves meeting guests and the feeling is mutual. When greeting people he is respectful and does not jump up or have submissive urination.
Long walks are one of Oreo’s pleasures although he will pull some on the leash. This is a Velcro boy who doesn’t care to be outside without company; he will not dig or jump a fence – he just wants to be with his people. Oreo loves to ride in the car and will take every opportunity to jump in and be a pleasant passenger. He loves to be petted and brushed and is a good boy at the groomer and vet.
Oreo was started on an inexpensive supplement to help with his anxiety and it has really made him much more comfortable. Prior to starting the supplement he would hide and stay away from anything new or different or he was unsure of. He is much more willing now to take a chance and go check out whatever caused him concern.
Oreo is as sweet as his name implies and a real pleasure to have around. He needs a home where the temptation of chocolate becomes a distant memory for him. Do you have room for this smart cookie?
