Original: “As a well-rounded young adult, Oreo does LOVE tennis balls and will initiate play with other canines.”
Oreo is a young boy and, with that youth, comes lots of energy! He was surrendered to MAESSR by an owner in Ohio where he regularly played ball with the family’s older grandchildren, ages 1 ½ to 15 years. Because of his energetic pace and a worry that he might topple the little ones, he wasn’t allowed around the toddlers. There are no children in Oreo’s foster home but he may be meeting some who will enjoy ball games as much as he does.
Off to a good start in foster care, Oreo is proving good with both dogs and cats. At first he is shy with other dogs, especially if they are rambunctious. If, on the other hand, they are calm and give him a chance for proper canine introduction, he is fine with them. When it comes to meal time, Oreo is fed separately from the resident dogs; this is because the resident dogs share each others’ food and Oreo may not feel comfortable with this just yet. When given treats, he takes them very gently. He appears to have little to no interest in cats. Here again, the resident cats are very dog- savvy and have given Oreo a chance to come to them, instead of the cats going to him. What good cats!!
Oreo is completely housetrained and will signal that he needs to potty by going to the door. He also walks fairly nicely on a leash, but a little obedience training would not hurt to help him build his confidence. He knows several commands: sit, give paw, down, off and (a short) stay. He will also put his butt onto a stool and sit nicely if you have one available……………really cute and possibly worth having a stool just for him!
While his foster family is at work, Oreo is placed in a crate. His foster mom believes that he would be okay with free run of the house; however, with the young resident springers, there would surely be trouble and they would teach Oreo bad habits. At first he fusses and barks a bit when put into his crate, but he quickly settles down. Having a crate for him is great as he has demonstrated his ability to hop a key baby gate with no problem.
When his family is home, Oreo behaves very well in the house. He has not gotten on to any of the furniture, except for his foster mom’s bed; he loves to cuddle there. He will also counter-surf but quickly puts his paws back on the floor when told “off.” There are no trash cans available for dogs to be tempted by, so no mischief there. He also does not chew on inappropriate things nor does he beg for human food.
As a well-rounded young adult, Oreo does LOVE tennis balls and will initiate play with other canines. He also loves to go out for long walks with his family. His foster family can already see that Oreo is definitely a Velcro boy and likes to be with his people. If given the opportunity to be on your lap, that is where he will be! With such a good start, surely more good news will come on this sweetie………………
