Allergies and asthma had progressed over years for Oreo’s owner since she first adopted him as a one year old from a Maryland shelter. During the owner’s recent pregnancy, Oreo stayed with a family member and during his absence, her allergies vastly improved. Since the baby arrived and Oreo returned home, the owner began suffering terribly with both allergies and asthmatic attacks. Regretfully, she knew that Oreo had to be re-homed for her own health even though Oreo had gotten along well with the new baby. So, she contacted MAESSR to find her sweet four-legged boy a new home.
Oreo is a small, sweet Velcro boy who gets along with adults and children and other dogs, big or small. This sweet cookie is even good with cats! When he met the resident cat, he sniffed her nose-to-nose, then sniffed her rear politely, and went on exploring the rest of his foster home with no further interest in the young cat. His non-aggressiveness with cats showed up again with the vet’s cat where he did not bother her as she wandered around in the waiting room. Good boy, Oreo!
This little love is a great boy in the house. He is house-trained and has no bad house manners. If his foster mom has to go out for a bit, he is fine having full run of the house. Oreo has never been crate-trained, but this is not an issue since he is so well-behaved. Content to lie on the floor by his foster mom’s feet, Oreo is just happy to be with his people. At night he curls up next to the bed and sleeps contentedly. When he needs to go out to tend to business, he does so quickly and comes right in. He stays around the house and comes when called.
In the house he will play with the resident dogs enjoying this activity, but when play time is over, Oreo is happy to sleep. At his previous home, he played with toys and would fetch and return. His foster family has found that when given the command “give me the toy,” Oreo will return the item to you. Although he has never attended formal obedience classes, he does know the basic commands. He walks well on the leash, too. If he sees another dog on a walk, he will bark at it but will run to the house if the animal walks toward him. Oreo rides well in the car. When the car stops at a light, he stands and lies down again when the vehicle moves. He is a very well-behaved passenger even without a crate; he never attempts to help his foster mom drive or anything!
Fine with being groomed, Oreo allows his feet and ears to be touched. He was a good boy at the vet too. Because of his skin infection, Oreo has to take medicated baths and he is quite cooperative when it is bath time. The vet found that Oreo also had both eye and ear infections, so he is being treated for these ailments too. When it is meal time, he eats well and does not bother the other dogs” food bowls. With all of the additional exercise he has been getting at his foster parents” farm, Oreo has been slimming down–something that the vet recommended. Running free through the fields with his dog buddies is a new experience for Oreo. At first, he was awkward at it, but then a light bulb clicked and he got the hang of running and zooming around the fields. What a happy (and tired) boy he was! Another new experience for Oreo is being near a creek. Although he is afraid of it, he does venture in for a drink.
Oreo would do well in any home by himself or with other dogs or children older than five. This small boy loves attention and although mostly quiet, he makes a squeak noise when excited. Your heart will melt when you hear that and look into his eyes framed by the longest, thickest eyelashes his foster has ever seen in a dog! Meet Oreo and fall in love!
