Update 07/26/10:
Oreo is one lucky girl! Her heartworm infestation was mild so an easier treatment was an option. It’s now complete without a hitch. There will be a waiting period of three weeks and, at that time, she will be started on monthly preventative. Way to go, Oreo!!
This sweetie has made herself quite at ease in her foster home. She is getting along with a large number of resident dogs and other fosters, both large and small. With them she comes and goes through the doggie door and has run of the house when her family is home. When they are at work or away, she is crated alongside the rest of the crew.
She has totally won over her foster parents and will do the same with her adopting family when the time comes. Oreo has no special needs, likes or dislikes. She’s an easy-to-live-with, easy-to-love kind of gal and will settle quickly into any Springer-loving home. She’ll be available soon and can’t wait for a family to make her their own!
Original:
Oreo came to MAESSR when her Virginia family could no longer care for her. When she arrived at her foster home, she got a haircut and had a visit to the vet. Through all of these new experiences, Oreo’s wonderful, loving self showed through. Her blood work indicated that she was heartworm positive, so she is being treated to ensure that she will be as healthy as can be. Serious and potentially deadly, heartworm disease in dogs is preventable with monthly prevention medication which all MAESSR dogs receive and must continue to receive once they are adopted. During treatment, the infected dog must be confined and its activity severely restricted. It receives a series of injections which kill the worms in the heart. This treatment is long and arduous for the infected dog and for the foster family alike. Get better, Oreo!
This black and white beauty loves belly rubs and will lie for hours just so her people can pet her and love on her. She also loves to ride in the car and is always up for a trip, short or long. Although Oreo will get on furniture and would love to sleep in the bed with her new family, she has been sleeping in a crate at night in her foster home. Although Oreo does not really need to be crated, there are many resident and foster dogs in her foster home, so being crated is standard procedure there. Her foster parents cut her some slack during nap time when Oreo sneaks on the bed for a little rest!
This pretty girl is very sweet and loving and will be a fantastic addition to a lucky family. Watch for more on her as she undergoes her heartworm treatment.
