This absolutely adorable Springer pup found himself needing MAESSR’s help when his New Jersey mom was going for surgery and, without a fenced yard, the family would not be able to give Oliver the exercise he needs.
Since coming to his foster home, Oliver had been completely housetrained. He is crated at night and during the day, but let out every four hours or so. He seems to put a paw on the back door if he wants out. He is crated as well when his foster folks are away just to avoid any issues.
Perky pup loves his foster doggie pals, playing chase, catch, keep-away and generally having a great time. In the house, he’ll sometimes play too much with the other young dog, and usually one of them is crated during the workday so the other will calm down and their foster mom can get work done! Oliver also loves to fetch toys and plays by tossing them in the air. He’ll hit his foster mom in the leg with a soft rattle toy, hoping to get some attention—he just doesn’t understand that four-lettered “work” word!
Oliver knows “sit,” “down,” “roll over,” and “come.” Although this well-mannered pup doesn’t guard toys or food, he is crated for meals since he eats more quickly than the others and is more than willing to help clean other bowls. Although he will put a paw up on the counter, he’s learned “NO” means take it down and keep it down. He has not bothered the trash at all. When invited on the futon, he comes up and does his lap dog impersonation, but doesn’t get up on his own. Other than picking up sticks and chewing them, this love hasn’t chewed anything inappropriate or destroyed any of the stuffed animals that he’s spread across the room. Typical puppy, his leash manners aren’t wonderful because he likes to pull; he would probably do better with a Gentle Leader or harness. He has never been groomed but loves brushing and reportedly was well behaved when he went for weekly baths at a dog wash. He was great at the vet’s, amusing everyone by wagging his little tail away. Oliver loves car rides and sits tethered in the back looking out.
This youngster seems to have never met a stranger, dog or human, and rushes over for attention whatever the situation. He doesn’t really jump up unless over excited by tone of voice, seeming to know to sit and wag his whole body instead.
Oliver seems more mature than his young age–until you look at him and invite him over. As with all MAESSR pups, obedience classes are a requirement for adoption. MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. With Oliver (full name “Oliver Branch”) being so smart, he’ll just soak in knowledge and be an even nicer dog than he already is.
His ideal home would be one where he had either someone around to give him attention or possibly another playful doggie companion. Weighing 50 pounds at six months, Oliver will probably be a good sized dog and really small children might get bumped over by his size. But, with maturity and training, that may not be a problem. He’s a great dog and will make someone very happy. Christmas is coming and with it, Oliver’s furever home. Are you interested in making it yours??
