Original Odessa was found as a stray and was taken to a South Carolina animal shelter. The shelter thought she had been on her own for a long time and had spent most of her life outdoors. Her coat should have been dark liver and, instead, it was orange from sun bleaching and/or malnourishment. She was extremely lethargic when she came to the shelter and would not eat.
MAESSR immediately offered its assistance once it was discovered she was at the shelter; however, shelter personnel said Odessa was too sick to travel since she had a bad upper respiratory infection, was malnourished, and was not interested in eating. MAESSR started networking and within an hour a local rescue group had arranged for one of their volunteers to pull Odessa and move her to a vet for treatment.
Sadly, the news from Odessa’s vet was not good. Poor Odessa weighed only thirty pounds– approximately twenty pounds under weight. She also had severe pneumonia plus other infections which were causing her lethargy. Although she was immediately started on IV fluids and three different types of powerful antibiotics, Odessa did not survive.
Sometimes help comes too late.
