When Oakley’s owner for his first 6 years had serious health problems, he and two other dogs went to a shelter in South Carolina. Originally pulled by a different Springer rescue, he went to a new home where he ended up not being a good fit as a busy neighborhood and four walks a day in it were a bit stressful for him.
Oakley’s completely housetrained, giving a soft whimper on the rare occasion that the resident dogs don’t ask to go out often enough. He self-crates during the day while his foster mom works at her desk but gets up to follow her to make coffee or take a break. He has free roam of the same four rooms as the resident dogs while foster folks are away, and sleeps in an open crate at night from 10 until whatever time the other dogs wake the family up.
Oakley (nicknamed Opie) has decent house manners. He doesn’t counter-surf if anyone is looking, and then it’s really just a paw up. There is no trash diving or even considering chewing things he shouldn’t. He does love flopping on the doggie day bed while the humans watch TV, joining the resident male. They seem to have drawn an invisible “my half, your half” line on the bed, not touching but both relaxing. He knows “sit” and “down” and he’s reasonable on leash, either solo or in tandem with his foster sister. He will sometimes bark at approaching strangers but is learning to “sit” for high value treats as the proper reaction. On his 60-mile ride to his foster home, he just flopped in the passenger seat with his head on the center console. Going out for a walk, he looks at his foster mom’s vehicle as if to say, “We walking here or driving somewhere?”
Oakley reportedly does fine at the groomer, and got his current hair cut two months ago. He has no issues with being touched all over. Combining wonderful Springer Spaniel appearance and attitude, and non-shedding poodle type hair, Oakley still need regular grooming and haircuts.
Oakley is blind in one eye due to an untreated cataract. He gets a drop of medicine in each eye in the morning after breakfast. He flops upside down to make this easier and then prances around wagging when told he’s a “good boy.”
Oakley will occasionally play with a soft toy or tennis ball if his foster folks show a lot of interest, but it’s not his main priority. He does love Kong toys stuffed with treats, though. He doesn’t quite have “chase” down with the resident sight-hounds. He’ll race after them thinking they’ve found something interesting when, really, they’re just running around for the sake of doing it. He’s somewhat dominant on his interactions with them but there have been no problems at all.
His energy level is “laid back” when nothing’s going on. But if a leash is picked up, he bounces into being an instant hiking or running companion. Reportedly he lived with cats and if the dog friendly cat approached him, he might grumble at it to go away. He would probably prefer a cat that wasn’t interested in his company. He’s fed a few feet away from the resident dogs with no issues, and does “sit” for treats alongside them. It’s unknown if Oakley is a swimmer but he loves stepping into the three inches of water in a baby pool to drink.
Oakley would love to have a home in a quiet neighborhood where someone’s around on a regular basis. He’s not at all destructive if left solo but does love his humans. He’ll lean into either of his foster parents for affection. Oakley is a laid-back boy just looking to share his love and be cherished.
