Updated 5/18/07: When Nitro visited the vet for his check-up, there was good news and bad news. The good news is that he tested negative for heartworm disease. Yeah! The bad news is that he tested very strongly positive for Lyme disease. For this, Nitro will be taking high doses of antibiotics over the next few weeks. Fortunately, he willingly takes his pills in a bit of cheese. He’s a good and easy patient.
With a little time to settle into his new home, Nitro is showing more interest in toys and is starting to play more with the resident dogs. He still wants to get up on furniture but rarely does more than lay his head of the sofa and gaze wistfully. He is trustworthy in the house. He resists being crated at this time, so his family is working with him on this should he need to be crated sometime down the road.
This boy loves his walks, and has started to trim down. More on Nitro.
Original: Nitro’s family turned him in to the local SPCA because he was getting harassed by their other dog. It is unclear why Nitro was chosen to be relinquished since he is such a sweet springer.
He is making a good transition to his foster home, doing fine with the other foster dogs and enjoying the attentions of the resident eight-year-old boy. Although his foster family has no cats, the SPCA surrender sheet says that he had lived with cats.
Nitro is a beautiful liver and white boy, who needs to lose a few pounds. He is house broken and has good house manners. There has only been minimal counter surfing and garbage diving for this gentleman! Nitro knows the basic commands. According to his turn-in sheet, he will grumble if you ask him to “shake” but if you hold out your hand he will give you his paw. His foster home will test this out after he’s had a chance to settle. Nitro clearly loves to go out for walks and walks briskly along without pulling. He also rides well in the car.
Nitro is very vocal, and does not like to be left behind if a foster family member moves to another part of the house where he is not allowed to go. He hasn’t objected vocally when his foster family actually leaves the house, only if they leave the designated “dog proof” part of the house. His foster family has not tried crating Nitro yet. He clearly was allowed on furniture, including the bed, and is learning the no-furniture rules at his foster home.
Nitro hasn’t picked up tennis balls, bones and other toys yet, but has given them a sniff. More will follow as Nitro gets more familiar with his foster family.
