Poor Morgan was found wandering the streets in Maryland a few days before Christmas. A Good Samaritan took him in and attempted to find his owners. Surprisingly, nobody called her looking for this sweet Springer boy. Not having the resources to care for a dog long-term, she dropped him off at a local shelter in the hopes that they would find him a good home. Morgan didn’t know it at the time, but that was his lucky day! The shelter was just minutes from a MAESSR foster home and it wasn’t long before he was safe and sound in foster care.
Once he arrived at his foster home, Morgan made fast friends with the resident female Springer pup (also nine months old) and quickly learned his way around the sometimes cantankerous three year old. He also has three feline foster sisters, who he largely ignored at first. Unfortunately, his puppy foster sister taught him her game of chase the kitties! Now if a cat runs, Morgan will sometimes run after it, but only in play. When the cats are sleeping or just walking past, he will still ignore them. Morgan’s first week in foster care was full of new adventures for him. He went to the groomer, who described him as a doll. Other than being a little nervous when the clippers were used around his head, he was very well behaved. At the vet, Morgan was poked and prodded and took it all in good spirits. While his foster mom was speaking with the vet after he got all his shots, Morgan lay under the exam table and took a little snooze. Fortunately, it was all good news for this healthy young boy! He easily won over everyone at the office with his sweet personality, puppy soft coat, and striking eyes (one blue and one green!).
It is sometimes hard to believe that Morgan is still a puppy since he has been such a well-behaved houseguest. He is housebroken, and while he does not signal to go out, he has not had any accidents during his time in foster care. He does not chew on inappropriate objects, trash dive, or attempt to get on furniture. He has cruised the counters occasionally, but is learning to respond to the off command. Morgan does not seem to have been previously crate-trained, but took to it with minimal protesting. Now he sleeps through the night in his crate, and also stays there when his foster parents are at work.
Morgan is a little restless in the car at first, but settles down after a few minutes. On leash walks, he will pull, but responds to corrections. Like most puppies, he could use some work in this area. A smart boy, Morgan learned sit in a flash and is getting better with his down. There will be plenty of time for his new family to teach him all kinds of things during the obedience class that is required for all MAESSR adoptees under one year old.
Even as a Springer puppy, Morgan has a fairly moderate energy level. He loves to run and wrestle with the younger resident Springer. One of the cutest sights has to be Morgan gleefully bounding through the yard with his favorite toy in his mouth, trying to entice his foster sister into a game of tug. Inside, he enjoys chewing on bones and stuffed toys. He also likes to carry a ball around in his mouth in the hopes that someone will throw it for him, although returning the ball is still a foreign concept. While Morgan loves playing, he settles easily when everyone is relaxing in the evening.
Morgan gets along well with the human, canine, and feline members of his foster family. He has no guarding or aggression issues. While he hasn’t been exposed to many children during his time in foster care, he has greeted those he’s met at the pet store and the vet gently but with great enthusiasm. Morgan could do well in a variety of different homes. Wouldn’t you love to make him yours?
