Moose came to MAESSR after he snapped at the 8 month old baby in the house when the baby was pulling up on him. The Virginia family was afraid the child might get hurt, so the difficult decision was made to re-home Moose. Moose was also acting aggressively to other dogs when he met them on leash; however, he was fine with them as long as he was not leashed.
When people come to the door, Moose barks but not excessively. To remind the newcomers that he is there, Moose jumps up on them for pats. For the most part, Moose has very nice house manners. He does not chew inappropriately or beg for food. Curious to see if something wonderful may be waiting on the counter for him, Moose will try to counter-surf and must be reminded to keep four on the floor. He also likes to sleep in bed with his foster parents and hangs out in the recliner when they are not home. Outside, he does not dig or jump fences. Instead, Moose likes to play ball and swim. He’s not a super high energy dog, however. When on walks, Moose does pull some on the leash. He loves car rides and is an excellent passenger.
Currently, Moose is being treated for low thyroid levels. He will need to be kept on inexpensive thyroid supplements for the rest of his life. His foster mom believes that his low thyroid levels are the cause of the hot spots he has experienced on a regular basis in his life. Since the thyroid meds were started, his energy and attitude have both improved significantly.
Moose has done extremely well with the multitude of dogs in his current foster home. His foster family has not seen any aggression or grouchiness to the other dogs as was reported by his former family.
This is one extremely sweet boy. Moose epitomizes the good qualities of his breed and one would be hard pressed to find a nicer Springer!
