Update 07/18/2014: “Happy-go-lucky Monte will do well with any family that provides him the time, patience, and love that all young dogs need to thrive.”
Silly Monte continues to entertain his foster family with his antics. He has a great deal of energy and loves playing tug rope with the resident Springer who is just a little older than Monte. And he LOVES chewing on tennis balls! Monte has recently discovered a basket of small stuffed animals that his foster parents keep for the grandchildren and will sneak one out if they’re not watching.
While Monte has yet to meet any young children, he has encountered preteens. They all love Monte and he is happy to have anyone pay attention to him.
This young lad has been discovered to be quite the sneaky escape artist. Whenever the front door is opened, he loves to shoot out and visit the neighbors. His foster family is working on his recall. He’s such a happy boy, though, that it’s really hard for them to be upset with him for long. Monte hasn’t climbed the fence between yards recently, but he does stand up and look over it to see what’s going on in the neighbors’ yard. That’s pretty good control for an active youngster!
While Monte’s training is progressing nicely, please note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and under to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. For Monte, this will forge the puppy-human bond and give him the skills to be the best dog he can possibly be.
Happy-go-lucky Monte will do well with any family that provides him the time, patience, and love that all young dogs need to thrive. Consider Monte for your next family member.
Original: “Monte is all puppy! He has a high energy level, and his full, feathery tail is constantly wagging.”
Monte’s Maryland kennel closed, and this handsome fella became a MAESSR boy entitled to all the wonderful homes, food, and benefits that come to his Springer “cousins.” At some point in his past, he supposedly nipped at a neighbor dog; however, in the short time he’s been in the foster home, he has blended in very well with the 2- and 9-year-old Springers. His foster family has seen no signs of aggression and suspect his puppy exuberance may have been the cause of the previous report.
This youngster is housetrained and has had no accidents in his foster home; he has no apparent signal, but goes outside when the other dogs do. He goes into the crate willingly and is crated when the family is not home. At night he’s content to sleep on the bedroom floor on a dog bed at the foot of the bed.
Monte is fed in his crate only because the other dogs in the house eat too slowly, in his opinion, and he likes to help them along! He shows no resource guarding of any type; his foster family is able to take food and toys out of his mouth.
This love is such a joy in the house. While he still has lots of puppy energy, he entertains himself when not playing with the other dogs. He has wonderful manners inside and will politely come for lots of petting and tummy rubs. He has tried to sniff out the countertops and would probably do so if not watched closely, especially since he would certainly be able to reach items on the counters due to his height. Typical puppy, Monte explores everything . . . including any trash cans without lids. Ever the polite house guest, he gets on furniture only when invited to do so. Otherwise, he lies on the floor or on a dog bed. Puppies will be puppies and this guy likes to chew. When given lots of appropriate items, he chews on them, but, opportunistically, if no toy is available, he will find other things to chew. His foster family makes sure to have a lot of toys or chew bones around the house. Speaking of toys, Monte loves stuffed squeaky toys and Nylabones—but most of all, he loves a tennis ball!
Monte knows “sit,” “down,” and “stay.” He also comes when his name is called. Leash walking is a mastered skill for this guy. He loves to be outside exploring all the new sights, sounds and smells. He is very much the hunting dog, though, and will try to chase squirrels or birds. When reminded of his manners, he will back off. Monte eagerly approaches humans and other dogs. He might appear to be a little too eager to dogs who don’t like the “in your face” approach, but he’s not confrontational at all—just playful. Puppy, puppy, puppy!!
A real clown, Monte has a playful, happy temperament. He knows no stranger and loves all people and dogs. He especially loves the puppy next door and has learned to climb the four-foot fence to get “up close and personal.” His foster family is working on teaching him that visiting in that way is not permitted. He does not jump up when meeting people, but since he’s such a tall fellow, his head is at the perfect height for lots of head rubs.
Monte is all puppy! He has a high energy level, and his full, feathery tail is constantly wagging. He gets a lot of time outdoors to burn off that energy, and, after a quick nap, is ready to go again. He loves to go for car rides and sits in the back looking out the window as the world goes by. And if that ride takes him to the groomer or vet or to have his nails clipped or ears cleaned, that’s all o.k.—it’s all good to this young man.
Monte will excel in a home where he has a lot of time outside to burn off all that puppy energy and, although he gets along well with all people and animals, he would probably be too much for a household with a small child as he would bowl over a little one in his excitement to play with them. A fenced yard is necessary to curb his exploring ways. Can you match the energy level of a 14 month old dog? Can you give him many, many toys to foster appropriate chewing? Are you ready to watch for that wagging tail—a real tail? Monte is looking for his permanent home—maybe it can be yours!!
