Update 10/05/12:
Molly Marie has undergone her second surgery to remove remaining mammary tumors. After this second procedure, she had a little set back in the form of a minor infection. A quick trip to the vet and a prescription of antibiotics turned this around in no time. This sweet girl has also lost 7 pounds since her surgery. This is wonderful news!
After her last sutures were removed, Molly was on her way to a full spa treatment. As expected she was a TOTAL DIVA at the groomer! Molly thoroughly enjoyed a nice warm bath and haircut and all of the fussing over her. She was a real joy to the groomer and did not mind at all having her ears or feet messed with. Now she will have a truly beautiful coat for the fall and winter and nice curly ears.
This little gal has come a long way. From her lot as a shelter stray, facing the unthinkable due to health issues, to a bouncy healthy girl on her way to a forever home, Molly Marie is at the heart of rescue!!
Update 08/25/12:
Molly is still doing very well in her foster home. Upon having her follow-up visit for her first surgery, the office staff gave her the nickname “Springer Diva!” Molly just loves everyone in the office and knows that, if she plays hard to get, they will give her treats! She has also lost 3 pounds. While most of that may have been the nasty tumor she was carrying, she is beginning to show a waistline too.
This girl continues to be an easygoing joy to have around. Molly and the resident five year-old love to play and steal toys from each other. Molly has also become quite the watchdog. If there is someone that she does not know lurking around, she will surely sound the alarm. The only thing is, she would most likely say “While you’re here, can you give me a cookie?!”
Molly will be returning to the vet to have a second surgical procedure to remove a few more mammary tumors. They are not cancerous, but the vet feels it is best to remove them for Molly’s comfort.
Watch for more on Molly, as this girl is on her way to recovery and finding her forever home!
Original:
Molly Marie’s background story is not an unfamiliar one and it sounds rather grim: she was picked up by animal control and taken to a shelter in Ohio. Things did not look good for her there since she had a huge mass on her belly and would likely be euthanized. Luckily, she was sent to yet another shelter where a very caring volunteer reached out to MAESSR and asked if we would consider taking Molly into rescue so her medical condition could be treated. The answer was of course, YES! Another compassionate volunteer from the shelter drove two hours with a very smelly Springer in his car to meet a MAESSR volunteer so Molly could begin the life she deserves.
Upon her arrival in her foster home, Molly Marie was immediately bathed and had the mats removed from her body. The next day Molly patiently sat for two hours while her foster mom shaved the mats from her ears. Within 24 hours of becoming a MAESSR girl, Molly was seen by a vet and had a chest x-ray. The vet determined that her large tumor was very operable and there was no visible sign of cancer which is what the shelter vets had originally thought and is why they recommended euthanizing her. While at the vet Molly was a very good girl; she let the vet and her tech do whatever they needed to with no fussing on Molly’s part. She must have known that they were helping her because she licked them while they were examining her. Molly was placed on oral antibiotics because the mass was infected from breaking open while dragging on the ground. She also was given ear drops because both of her ears were badly infected. From there Molly was scheduled for surgery to remove the mass within the same week.
Molly’s surgery was done on a Friday and she spent that night at the veterinary hospital just to make sure that everything was okay. Just two days after her surgery, other than the stitches, you would have never known that this girl had anything medically done to her! It was very difficult for Molly’s foster mom to keep her calm and to prevent her from jumping around. She clearly felt much better!
A true cuddle bug and Velcro springer, Molly Marie wants to be as close to her people as she possibly can and even if she is in a sound sleep, she can sense that you have left the room and will come looking for you. Molly is currently residing with four adult resident dogs, two cats, and two puppies (ages 8 weeks and 7 months) and she gets along with everyone. Molly is extremely patient and motherly to the 8 week old who constantly climbs on her and licks her face.
Molly has very good house manners and is completely housetrained although she does have slight urinary incontinence for which she is being treated successfully with medication. (The vet seems to think that once she is at a healthy weight ten pounds from now, the incontinence may subside.) Molly has attempted only twice to counter-surf but because she is on the short side, she couldn’t see anything anyway and gave up on it. This girl also loves her crate and she will walk in when she wants to nap or if it is mealtime. Molly is also very polite when taking treats, sitting and very gently taking it from your hand.
Molly can be a bit of a barker if she wants something or if she needs to go outside to relieve herself. If she wants her water bowl filled, watch out because she will pick her bowl up and literally toss it at you! Molly does not climb on the furniture, but that may change once she is completely healed and loses some weight! There is no opportunity for Molly to trash pick in her foster home, but since she loves her food, the potential could be there for raiding the trash.
“Sit,” “shake paw,” “down,” and “off” are all part of Molly’s repertoire of commands. She loves to go for her walks and is not bad on the leash. When in the car, she can be a little whiny at first, but quickly settles down. Since he is very trustworthy, Molly is given free run of the house at all times. Upon your arrival home from being gone, Molly will greet you with a wiggly butt and a toy in her mouth! She loves to carry things around with her. Molly has a day at the spa in store for her once her stitches are removed and her foster mom is guessing that she will love all of the attention.
This is one special girl so watch for more as she continues to recuperate!
